New Battlestar Galactica sometime in 2020 on NBCU’s Peacock Streaming Service

The new NBCUniversal streaming service that the company said Tuesday would be called Peacock will launch in April 2020 with original content that includes series reboots from the NBCU library among its fare. That list includes the return of a sci-fi classic: a new Battlestar Galactica, billed as an original series from Mr. Robot and Homecoming executive producer Sam Esmail.

I never liked the first series which was a blatant Star Wars ripoff.

I really enjoyed the SyFy series (and probably should watch it again some time this year).

I don't really see where they can go from here. Caprica was a mess I tried to like but couldn't.

I really don't see the allure of yet another streaming service. Is NBCU going to pull all original content from SyFy (what little there is left) and put it on the new service?

I doubt they'll close down Syfy, but we'll see. I could see them them putting seasons up in full on the service right away and doing it weekly on tv though, like how Channel 4 and Sky seem to do in the UK now.

I powered through the original series, I didn't like it but I wanted to finish it.. I liked the reboot until the final season. I don't see why they want to do it again so soon after the new one, there won't be anything new to tell.

Agreed 100% here. I was hesitant to watch the new Battlestar but damn Im glad I did. Its a great show and we watch the whole series once a year or close to it. Caprica was lame. Period. The original show(80's) was charming at times but a cheesefest nonetheless.

I cant imagine what a new version will be like or why Id care. Ill just watch the excellent existing show to get my fill. And yeah....another streaming service is exactly what the world needs. Please.

“We’re still working on the pilot. Look, it’s a big universe, it’s a big world, I want to respect the Ronald Moore Battlestar. I spoke to him before I even took on the project to make sure that it’s all kosher with him, because the last thing I want to do is step on his toes, and the one thing we both agreed on is that it won’t be a reboot of what he did. Which I think we both wanted.”

“It’s still in the early phases of trying to figure out the world via the pilot. I think we’ve got the basic construction of the type of story we want to tell, the part of mythology that we’re gonna explore – because Battlestar does have a rich mythology and again I have to give Ron a lot of credit for that – and so now we’re sort of closing in on what that pilot’s gonna look like.”

“When I spoke to Peacock about it, and Mike Lesslie who’s an amazing writer – he’s the one who’s showrunning and writing the pilot – the one thing we got excited by is do we release an episode a week, [release all at once]? For me it was like let’s get in there and tell the right story and it will tell us how many episodes. We may dump three episodes in a row because it’s a three-episode-long battle sequence that needs to be dropped in a row even though they’re three signifying chapters, and maybe each chapter is switching a point of view within that battle sequence. There may be a 20-minute episode that’s the backstory of one of the characters that gets dropped right after that.”

“I want to shoot later this year. Again a lot of that is up in the air given COVID and just the lay of the land in terms of where the world is and where we can even shoot it. The other thing is this is gonna require a big production just to even start up production and build the sets and start getting the VFX fine-tuned. One of the things I always attribute to the Ron Moore Battlestar is the VFX is just outstanding and pretty groundbreaking… it will be tough to get it off the ground this year, but that’s my goal. I’m pretty impatient, again I’m a fan of this show so I want to see it as soon as possible, so I’m gonna push for 2021.”

“Reboot” originally meant making an entirely new version. But it later came to mean resurrecting an existing version. Quite a shift in meaning!

When he said “it won’t be a reboot of what [Ron Moore] did”, I believe he was using the later definition.

So it will be an entirely new version.

He will never be “stepping on [Ron Moore’s] toes” because they won’t be in the same universe. Which makes sense, since it opens up the creative opportunities and avoids the pitfalls that Moore created (cough the final five cough). He will never need to touch bases (basestars?) with Moore again.

Is that everyone’s interpretation of the remarks?

BSG fans, this will NOT be a remake of the amazing series @RonDMoore launched because... why mess with perfection? Instead, we’ll explore a new story within the mythology while staying true to the spirit of Battlestar. So say we all!

I didn't love Caprica but it had some interesting ideas and chances are good there are other interesting ideas in the BSG fictional space a good team could explore.

Color me intrigued.

All I can say is I hope that this new streaming service is better than NBC’s current platform. Because that is buggy as hell for me. As far another BSG series, I’ll add another it feels a little soon and totally unnecessary. Having grown up with the original and watched the reboot they need to bring their A game.
