She was perfectly cast IMO. It’s a perfect horror movie.

It's a generalization. Happens quite often. Same goes for women with low self esteem. They allow guys to take advantage of them.

Regarding The Exorcist:

Also: Thank You for saying Regan was "twisting" her head around. I get so tired of people saying her head was "spinning"... ![]() |

Perhaps some are unaware but when I said Duvall worked well playing a character who is 'relatively homely, less educated and generally lacking in confidence', I wasn't attacking Duvall but rather comparing the character in Kubrick's film to the character in King's book. King's Wendy sexually excites Jack, is educated & cultured and is generally portrayed as a strong modern woman whereas Kubrick's Wendy is as described above. The Jack/Wendy/Danny relationship is written very broadly in the movie, especially in the Euro cut, and it would have been needlessly distracting had Kubrick cast someone who didn't have the stereotypical look and sound of someone who'd tolerate both Jack's clear lack of respect for her and the occasional bout of alcohol fueled child abuse.
Duvall also absolutely nailed her character's increasing hysteria and while some of that might have been thanks to actual on-set emotional abuse, her incredibly expressive face did some heavy lifting too. I can't imagine anyone else in the part. ![]() |
