As far as in reference to the player itself only, "decodes" I am assuming in your statement would be relevant to the player itself being able to decode the higher audio codecs, like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA. If you have a player than can decode, then no need for your receiver to do so. However, if you have a player that cannot decode these codecs, then it would need to bitstream them to a receiver that would need to have the capabilities to decode them instead. Don't forget to use HDMI too.

Sony S350 doesn't have analog outs. He would have to go for the S550 or the panasonic Bd55.

Those are your affordable options, you could of course go for a 2k player from Denon or Marantz.

I was assuming this was a typo, as no players have multichannel analog inputs.

The only reason you would need analog outputs was if you had an older receiver/processor that didn't have an hdmi input that could accept audio, or you wanted to use the dac's in the player rather than those located in the receiver.

I have and recommend the BD-P2500 from Samsung. It does everything you need. I haven't used other players so I cannot say that they are better or worse than my player only that it is a fantastic player in its own right.
