This movie is the one that has stuck with me and made the biggest impression on me this year.
I was thinking about it the other night when I was deciding what my favorite movies so far this year have been. And this one is definitely #1. |

3 stars for me. Maybe my expectations were too high coming from Ex Machina.
The most memorable part of the movie to me is the musical score. In a way this feels incomplete similar to Prometheus was incomplete, thought not on that level. The movie ends just when it really feels like it is picking up. |

Annihilation has one of those climaxes that doesn't need to be explained, its about the experience baby.

Yeah, I mean not every sci-fi movie needs to be Star Wars.

Gave this a third watch today and it's just as good. Watched it with my sister this time and it was pretty funny hearing that this was 68% on her Netflix. I mean I guess its accurate since she wasn't a big fan of this film. Though, I do wish that I had my own theatre so I could experience that bear scene all over again.
I also noticed a huge plot whole in the beginning that kinda solves itself at the end. Why would a facility like that not test Kane, who not only leaves the shimmer, but appears in Lena's bedroom? I'm almost positive that they knew about Kane being an alien clone of himself, which could be a big reason why Ventris is finally heading into the shimmer herself. I mean Lena is quarantined with Kane at the end and I refuse the believe that scientists would not notice the effects of the shimmer on the two. At least this is what I made up as head-cannon to solve that plot hole in the beginning. |

Apart from being one of the greatest sci fi movies of the last 10 years I also love how this was one of the strongest female driven movies ever and yet nobody picked up on it. Feminists just ignored it and were all over Ghostbusters and Wonder Woman instead.
A true modern classic imo |

I think the reason it didn't get more play, was the studio politics surrounding the film overshadowing it. Remember that it ALMOST didn't get shown in theaters, and was almost close to just becoming a direct to Netflix movie. It instead got a very limited release. |

Well, unfortunately I didn't think it was that good, which partly, at least for me, explains its limited success.
If you really want a philosophical experience, read the books (all three that make up the Southern Reach Trilogy). Quite frankly, I was expecting the same sort of metaphysical exploration you get in the books but, disappointingly, all I saw was a space monster movie. But if you all really liked it, that's great too. Maybe it's just me... |
