If you really want a philosophical experience, read the books (all three that make up the Southern Reach Trilogy).

Quite frankly, I was expecting the same sort of metaphysical exploration you get in the books but, disappointingly, all I saw was a space monster movie.

But if you all really liked it, that's great too. Maybe it's just me...
Sounds like its mostly you, the last act is pretty far removed from a space monster film. Book expectations tend to muddy opinions too.

I took issue more with specific plot points but as a sensory experience the last act was a trip well remembered and the encounter with the beat aroused some real tension. This is coming from somebody who needs to catch up on the source material so take that in mind.

I bought the whole trilogy right after seeing the test screening, but it's been over two years and I haven't touched it lol. I'll get to it eventually.

I got through the first book in two days but the second one is a much harder read. It’s just...not as exciting and I still haven’t finished it.

The first book sucked you in but the second is such a change of pace, style and perspective that it is a much tougher read. And then everything comes together in the third book.
The moment I finished the third book, I reread the entire trilogy from a different perspective (of acquired knowledge) and it was like reading it anew.

After Ex Machina, I thought that this could have been another really special movie with such a stunning source but, at least for me, it was not to be.

I really liked it too. Totally different take on the sci-fi genre and finally we get a movie that does NOT have some sappy, family centered ending like almost all other sci-fi films these days. I realize that Portman’s character was the center of the film and some of the ideas but as whole the movie aimed larger than one person. She didn’t reunite with her dad or some crap like that at the end. Good!

No I mean feminists didn't jump on the fact that it was a film based around strong female characters. Everyone pretty much ignored the movie.
