The StudioCanal ''restoration'' isn't a restoration. It's the same master that Scream Factory used in 2013.

From this sites review:

Quote:
I expected a different type of technical presentation because this release was actually promoted as being sourced from a "new restoration". However, it appears that only some digital work was done to improve what was already available on a pre-existing master. To be perfectly clear, while there are indeed some minor enhancements that help the film have a slightly better organic appearance than the one that is present on the old French release that we reviewed back in 2010, the current master simply has plenty of limitations. The visuals can range from decent to good, but there is also plenty of footage where delineation could be a lot better (see screencapture #8). A lot of the same sharpening that was present on the previous release has been retained as well, though overall here the end result is marginally better. Colors are stable, but a fresh new remaster would deliver stronger primaries and better ranges of nuances. Image stability is very good.

Whatever Studio Canal did the picture quality is a lot better than the Scream. I don't have the greatest eyes but watching both one evening has me about to sell the Scream version w/slip this month.

Any chance they will release this new disc (with the new interview) in a standard package?

I watched my The Howling (steel) last night, and really enjoyed it. Don't think I had seen it before, which was surprising to me. Another surprise was the blatant cartoon in the middle of the movie. Jeez! All in all, I liked it...

That is a cheesy moment, but hey, it was 1981, so doing a full-body transformation sequence was still impossible in the pre-digital era.

It's currently $16.19 in Shout Factory's Shocktober sale. I think free shipping is at $50 if you find other stuff in the sale.

Does this release actually have the "NEW 'Fun. Fur. Film.' – An Interview With Actress Dee Wallace" feature that was announced? I went to Best Buy tonight to buy this release, but when I looked at the back, the feature isn't listed and the only review I can find (at The Digital Bits) doesn't mention it.

There was talks earlier in this thread that the SF steel uses the newer Studio Canal master. Does anyone know if that's the case, or if it's at least a different encode from the original SF release?

It looked silly when it was originally released. Still, the werewolves looked pretty great.

At the end when Dee Wallace changed was another silly moment. She looked like a puppy compared to earlier werewolves.

I do love the movie, though.

I just noticed an online listing of the features for this and it includes a second commentary "By Author Gary Bradner." Was this included on the original SF release?

Well, that's very interesting because it's not listed anywhere on the case of the original SF Blu. The other commentary with Dee Wallace is listed on the packaging and is actually ported over from a special edition laserdisc from the mid-90s. If the Gary Bradner commentary has been on the SF disc all this time, I never even knew it was there.

I wish Netflix or someone would make an animated limited series based on the sequel to the original film The Howling, called The Howling: Revenge of the Werewolf Queen comics. It could even be animated like Netflix's Castlevania series

I got The Howling steelbook in the mail from Amazon today. My husband gets Verizon coupons for Amazon purchases so I ordered me The Howling steelbook and him Happy Death Day 2U Blu-ray for a total of $22. About $11 each.

I also bought off Ebay last week the Studio Canal UK release of The Howling. Gonna watch that one tonight to check out the PQ.

Contemplating selling my slipless, but still sealed original release for this nice steel...but I'd be losing like $4.
