I saw it at a local theater this past Thursday and skipped around the disc tonight. Given your setup, I'd only recommend making a trip to the theater if you know it'll be shown on a good screen (the one I watched it on didn't show off the improved detail very well). Can't comment on how this sounds at home but I wasn't too impressed by my theater's audio either. Knowing what I know now, I'd have preferred my first viewing have been at home.

While this is absolutely true (and something I’ve already alluded to), it doesn’t change the fact that it’s just as easy for the digital preparation of these modern home video masters to be done with the correct ratios. That there have surely been less accurately framed presentations of these movies is not a good reason to forgo doing it right when it isn’t any more expensive to do so.

And this is a practice which is completely outmoded. No one’s watching UHD media on analog CRTs with overscan. One of the best qualities of digital media is that one-to-one mapping means that framing can always be accurate on these virtually master-quality presentations, but that benefit is destroyed if the distributors kneecap the format by putting the wrong framing on disc as a matter of policy.
I'd have to agree Doctorossi, I think that if they'd chosen not to crop slightly and preserve the 1:85:1 on UHD movies like the Shining and Saving Private Ryan, they would just look that little bit sharper and therefore better, sort of like disabling overscan on your TV.

I did watch the Shining last night and thought it looked as good as it possibly could, very natural and some scenes displayed really impressive depth, some of this is down to the way it was shot with very symmetrical framing and angles used throughout. I was drawn in like I haven't been previously and found the film even more disturbing this time round. The small facial movements from the cast really conveyed the sense of terror and desperation of their situation. Detail was very good but mostly not in the upper echelons of the format so far....but make no mistake I believe every ounce of celluloid was captured here!

Colours were far richer and bolder than the old blu ray, HDR was mostly subtle but used to good effect whenever bright sunlight entered the frame. I thought the beginning flyover was one of the coolest opening sequences ever in 4k, detail on the trees and distant mountains was incredible given the film stock/age of the movie. So good to own a movie of this quality with image quality that really does it justice! My favourite horror film along with Alien, Halloween 78 and Psycho. £20 for this feels like a steal too!

I noticed a bit of fade at the left edge in particular in some shots which I guess may have been a bit more obvious in 1:85 ratio.

The point of the crop might be to actually help keep it sharp, not the opposite. Keeping it in 1.85 as it appears on the master means scaling the image which can lead to some filtering, or they could've slapped 1.85 borders over the top of the 1.78 image as it appears now. This could've properly approximated a theatrical 1.85 according to moviebuff's excellent comparison, but would be losing even more height compared to the old 1.78 transfer which (as always) is regarded as some bastion of accuracy.

Mine should be in my mailbox when I get home. This could be my first movie to start Halloween season off.

No, Amazon haven't posted it yet, same with Gremlins. Typical really, I either get it from them the Sunday before it comes out or I gotta wait a week.

Popped this in last night to spot check the disc and ended up watching half the film before the sandman got me. The PQ is quite stunning, to say the least. An odd thing happened with my copy, though. I've been commenting on a couple of these UHD threads about how every time I watch a new UHD title, the PQ looks too dark on my setup. Well, sure enough, this also looked dark when I first popped it in but after I stopped the disc to take care of something and came back to the film (I don't know if there's a resume feature but I had to start from scratch) the darkness was gone and I was left with beautiful, breathtaking image. I didn't change any of the settings so that was weird. I may watch the opening sequence again after I sit to watch the rest of the film tonight. I want to experience that scenery in glorious 4K again

Stupid question. Do US and UK 4k releases contain the same versions/cuts of the movie?

Ended up grabbing a copy at Archambault, $1 more than Sunrise but at least they had a copy in stock, plus they open 30 minutes earlier than Sunrise!

I'm 10 minutes in subway away from watching it, I might cry tears of joy.

Watched this last night (with the theatrical audio, though) and WOW, it was fantastic. Raised blacks in a few places, but only in a way that feels "accurate" to the physical film, if that makes sense. This is a great looking transfer, for sure.

Is that the DD 2.0? I will probably use the DTS HD audio and just turn off the Neural X upmixing.

In this specific case, it doesn't bother me that the aspect ratio it's 1.77, because the 2007 blu-ray was the same and it is the way I get used to watching the movie. If we add that the 4K PQ is spectacular, I am more than happy with this release.
