You can say that again! I really couldn't get into Fight Club, a movie with guys testosterone and masculinity on overdrive.

The point of which was to show how destructive, pointless and toxic it was. The disenfranchised, entitled men being a massive point of ridicule. But purely on a surface level, there is a lot of on screen masculinity, so fair enough if that is too offputting to have to watch.

Or more to the point, taking a massive dump on Ann Rands objectivism philosophy.

I just really don't like the idea that

[Show spoiler] the joker got exactly what he wanted. the villain was rewarded for his anti-social behavior. it came off as something that WOULD ABSOLUTELY be inspirational to would be, uh, people of that nature. He goes to arkham asylum as a 'hero' having started a movement. that sucks. I would have liked for his plan to have backfired, he doesn't get what he want, and gets sent to arkhamm only to become even more bitter and homidical. that would have been a better origin story befitting of a deranged person. because as it stands, the message seems to be 'society sucks and people like this are a product of society (and if you fight against the man with violence you'll get glorified and adored)'. following that thought to it's logical conclusion, he is sort of a blameless victim of his circumstance, which is a REALLY shitty message
If I may comment on
[Show spoiler]the asylum bit, didn't he say something in the beginning about how he was already in the hospital, and then it showed him banging his head on the door? What did he get committed for? Is the movie somehow cyclical?

Dunno if I’ll buy it day one but I’ll definitely get it at some point. It’s an incredible movie that I can’t imagine watching very often.

It's a wild ride. Deeply disturbing, unnerving and a very provocative look into a man that went from madness, to murder and mayhem. Very uncomfortable, cold, and mean spirited at times. There's a lot of ugly in this movie but it's as realistic as it gets when portraying the man we all know as The Joker. Phoenix is scary brilliant in the role.

Yes, there's a lot of ugliness, but there was beauty in his outstanding performance and in the fantastic cinematography. The sound design was impressive too. It was an immersive experience of some uncomfortable realities. Yet it was fascinating to watch. This should make for an incredible disc.

Critics and audiences will be split on whether the movie encourages or critiques violence, toxic masculinity, the ills of society, etc. I felt that the movie was great at humanizing the character (to a point) without ever once portraying him as someone anyone would want to be.

Also, there was a lot less violence in this movie than in most any action film. But it was not the exciting, glamorized, comedic, bloodless, "entertaining" kind of violence we usually get. So it has much more impact when it happens.

It was nice to see a movie that was about something rather than just another escapist fantasy flick. Oh, and they can go ahead and engrave Phoenix's name on the Oscar.

Totally agree. I got a chance to catch a 70mm showing and it had that gorgeous 70's look down wonderfully. Filmic in a way we rarely see done these days.

We'll have to see who his competition is before we do any engraving on an Oscar. A nomination at the least, is in the bag at this point.

Don't count your chickens before they hatch because after the real life controversy surrounding The Dark Knight Rises tragedy, Joaquin Phoenix may not even get a nomination, and if so, the families of the victims would be infuriated and initiate a protest, feeling as if the joker is being glamorized after what had occurred. That will never be forgotten. The late: Heath Ledger had won a posthumous academy award for portraying the same character, and I doubt very much that the members of the academy will allow for it to win again, that's if Joaquin Phoenix is even nominated, regardless how good his performance is.

I don't think anything you just said would have a bearing on his chances to win an award for his performance in this.

It might be open to interpretation..... Is it possible he doesn't actually hurt anybody, that all the acts of violence we see in the movie are him daydreaming while he's imprisoned at Arkham?
