Imagine how people would feel during the days you had to wait almost a year for home release? That’s what it was for VHS & for DVD it was at least 6 months. But I am liking that movies are getting much faster release dates.

I prefer watching films at home, so this has been a great change. Now more than ever with 4K.

Oh I totally agree as I work a lot of OT & I just have no time to go see movies, so bummed I missed out on IT Ch 2, but I will try my best to see Joker in theaters, if not I can wait 10 weeks.

You’re actually changing my mind and making believe Joker has a decent chance at winning, since it’s more memorable than all the movies you listed. I love Birdman and 12 Years a Slave but those are Inarritu’s and McQueen’s weakest films, and didn’t necessarily do anything we haven’t seen before. The best thing about both those films is the cinematography.

While you can make the argument that Joker also doesn’t do anything new, it’s the only movie this year and honestly in many years that has brought up topical issues and actually made people discuss(even people that usually ignore this stuff), which I believe is very important.

Moonlight is definitely not a masterpiece, Its beautifully shot but that’s it, all the themes in that film have also been in many foreign films that didn’t get recognition. Moonlight winning best picture was all politics and the academy should be ashamed of that.

Joker will definitely get nominated for best picture and many other nominations but the only Oscar I see it winning is best actor for Joaquin Phoenix.

Can't say I've seen anything that's as realised in themes of masculinity and environmental forming effects as Moonlight.

Problem is, I don't think Phillips is actually saying that. It just feels very 'edge-lord' to me. Not saying it's a bad movie, it just felt very empty to me.
I’ve heard that criticism a lot and it honestly baffles me a little bit. Isn’t the point of the movie just to have discussions about mental illness? Something that everyone especially politicians have been ignoring? The point was to humanize a person going through similar situations and show how if not given the proper help and attention could lead to horrific things (like we’re constantly seeing in the news but the media would prefer to take the easy way out and blame guns)
The things this movie brings up are topics many choose to ignore. I know this isn’t the first movie to ever deal with these themes but most average movie goers haven’t seen those films (and probably never will) but since this is a comic book movie, it has become the one that everyone wants to see and they are all having discussions they haven’t had before.

And if this was the point of the movie then I’m pretty sure it worked because it’s the most talked about movie of the year.

The very DNA of the Joker character is such that he's going to commit terrible acts of criminality, become that arch villain. It would be artisticly irresponsible to make him out and out sympathetic, and illogical when creating a villain. I say out and out, as I'm receptive to analysis that suggests the door is open a crack. Cause I know also art doesn't tolerate rigidity and logic.

I hope I'm right about that being the intent, but my point is that I honestly don't think Phillips is really going for that. This is all speculation on my part , but I think he just chose the early 80s New York setting for Gotham as a suitably depressing and grimy setting to match the tone of the movie he wanted to make. Of course it's just my opinion, but I think the whole point of the movie was him saying "See?? I can be edgy!".

The whole recording of the stand up routine makes me wonder if the story was originally set in the present day and transplanted into 1981 at a later stage.

This felt like a very ballsy movie for 2019, if anything it makes you wonder what happened to cinema. Are audiences desensitised or are most movies just not that shocking or provocative anymore?

Going by the amount of social media outrage I'm siding with the latter. It's about time actors, writers, directors and film industry insiders got off social media and stop entertaining the perpetually outraged and just do what they do best.

Also this film was a near masterpiece with amazing sound design, 4K Steelbook pre-ordered. Go see this film!

I haven't been to a theater in ages, and I don't miss it. I don't have to tolerate all of the distractions of: babies crying, cellphones, loud talking etc. I prefer to watch movies in the comfort of my own home theater, where I don't have to put up with the unruly drunks and druggies.

Having a nice home theater makes that choice easy, but I finally found a good theater nearby for this one, and might get out for a handful more movies throughout the course of a year now. At least for matinees. New company bought and rebuilt it, and I hadn't been there since probably 2001.

Either way, the UHD can't come soon enough. I can't wait to watch it again.
