Thanks! I absolutely loved the movie by the way.
Yeah I still think it will be a Feb release, but people are making a fine point that Venom was released around now and had a bluray by Christmas. Hopefully that is the case over here.

Joker has nearly grossed after this weekend 550 million worldwide. Crazy given it's budget.

Here's hoping the lesson WB takes away is to make more serious movies that are low on effects and high on drama rather than pressing ahead with a sequel.

I would say there's about a 1% chance they don't make a sequel.
That's the irony of it.

Well on its way to a finish north of $900 million worldwide, and that's without a China release. Extraordinary.

Currently the placeholder date on this site is December 17th. People, myself included don't think that is actually out of the realm of possibility given Venom's quick theater to home media turnaround last year. But I think it will be early 2020 to coincide with awards season

Are you seriously suggesting we can have comic book film's that are not all CGI fights? Where we don't have to constantly have the characters force jokes? To say see we know this is all over the top and silly (laughs anxiously).

I like those types of movies but variety is the spice of life. You don't want every movie to just copy Marvel.

If they are going to make a follow up they should make Lex Luthor (recast for sure) Show why a man with the intelligence to cure cancer is so fixated with Superman. John Byrne reinvented Lex as a businessman scientist who had a humanitarian exterior but was a calculating maniac behind the scenes. That would be fascinating to watch.

That isn't the lesson at all that came from this movie

This is an amazing movie top to bottom if there's any lesson its make good movies and people come and word of mouth builds rather than use a characters past to get butts in and then everyone realizes its a trash movie and nobody comes back.

All good movies don't succeed. So word of mouth helps but using established characters that have a new take will build hype and draw in a bigger crowd.
If the main character wasn't Joker and this movie was just an indie movie it wouldn't be the hit it is. You only have to look at Requiem for a Dream to see evidence of that.

That would be relative lol So you can't really draw that conclusion.

I think transformers 2 is a good watchable pleasure movie (box office success), meanwhile Megan fox was destroyed by the there will be blood crowd in here back then...

Joker is successful because its a fabulous movie that people like and want to see. That's the bottom line, nobodies walking in like wow yes now the dark verison of the DCU lol maybe you and a few, but that is not what drove this movie to success.

Oh and I thought R4ADream sucked so again relative to the individual

My basic point is (IMHO) the movie got exposure and thus more bums on seats because it was 'Joker' rather than 'John Doe'. The movie being good just meant more repeat viewings.

I agree with that.. My comment to you though wasn't the take away that the only way for the DCU to show success is dark. I wasn't disagreeing that joker didn't have a significant impact.

I'm saying if they make good movies like WW, Shazam, and this then people will come same way they go to Marvel movies...

Make convoluted trash comic and light, or Dark it'll inevitably flop.

That's circular logic. The initial "want to see" interest came 99% from this being a Joker movie. That was by far the most important factor that elevated interest in the film.

From there it became a well reviewed movie. Then it became a controversial movie. Then it became a poorly reviewed movie. Then it became a politically divisive movie. Then people saw it and realized that it was a very good/great movie. That came last.

Everything in the previous paragraph I wrote may have still happened if the movie was called "Arthur Fleck", but only among a handful of cinephiles and not the mainstream of the public.

The point is the combination of it being a good movie and having those ties are what got it to where it is... Otherwise JL and BvS wouldn't have been massive flops if all you had to do was elevate it and put fanboys in the seats.

Name recognition will get bums in the seats. A movie that is good will get word of mouth and repeat viewings.

Your argument is convoluted. Everyone knew they were duds beforehand. Besides, both franchises had been making iffy movies for years prior to their release.

The point is people don't go to the theaters like they used to. There are a multitude of other entertainment options that are easier and much cheaper and require less of a commitment of your time.

Generally:
  • A bad movie with name recognition = poor box office.
  • A good movie without name recognition = poor box office.
  • Joker, a great movie with name recognition, plus controversy, plus strong word of mouth, plus strong rewatachability (for some people) = Blockbuster.
And I hope it does lead to more character driven movies that are lower budget and can therefore take more thematic risks - which was the original point of this thread of the conversation.
