But I wouldn't have expected the complaints to last this long, that people wouldn't by now realize "Oh, film ends like the books", not on the side of Mount Doom or when Frodo wakes up next. They can still not care for the length of the film, but to say that it ended at the wrong place (after finishing the journey where it started, at The Shire, as in the book), is just weird to me. I can't believe I'm writing this but it appears that this has been re-released in the UK... Amazon UK have changed the release date of the same old product (same product page, same ASIN number) to 17th April 2019. It's being sold directly by Amazon UK for Ł29.53 and is 'temporarily out of stock'.
Anyone have an idea about this? If it were a preorder or something recent I would put it down to Amazon being bizarre as usual, but I've never seen this happen for such an old release, I don't why they would add such a specific release date and accept orders now if it weren't the real deal... A real/genuine release, as opposed to a glitch, human error, or otherwise faulty and misleading listing modification (which happens... a lot, especially on preorders... but seems unlikely here).

I went to the Releases tab for Fellowship, scrolled down to the Extended bundles with the British flag, which brought me to this page with a 2011 release date, but the click-thru to Amazon brings up the same 2019 page.
It's kind of weird, but I've seen non-monumental minor re-releases before, usually to fix a production problem. (Like fixing one episode in one season in the X-files box set.) I think we can all mostly agree that there's nothing really major / special with this, like a re-master to fix color grading -- I mean, there would be a lot of noise about THAT, wouldn't there? The Hobbits were shot 48fps which unfortunately is not in the UHD spec, so I doubt we’ll be seeing HFR home video releases any time soon.
