I'm not sure about it, but I think the straight cut will destroy the whole experience here...

The movie was already pretty homophobic before the “straight” cut,

I like the movie the way it is but that theme doesn't diminish just because there is a straight cut. It will just start off with innocence and ends with pure guilt as the running time moves forward.

I saw an interview with Noe saying that he's cut about 5 minted from the straight cut as putting things chronologically left some weird pacing, but he felt that it puts the emphasis on the performances over the plot, which made it interesting. I'm intrigued, but I'm half scared of watching the film again at all, let alone twice more to compare!

I guess. But it certainly felt more unique in the reverse. I'll remain open minded. Never good to outright dismiss something till I've seen it.

I wonder if some scenes were added aside from just cutting out scenes too?

Thankfully we won't be seeing a Smell-O-Vision cut.

I would definitely welcome a cut where
[Show spoiler]the right friggin' guy gets his head bashed in instead
but then again THAT would diminish from the main theme of the movie.

This film should get a lawsuit for the same reasons as with The NeverEnding Story.

It was shot on Super 16, IIRC, and required significant digital tinkering. I assume it has a 2K DI.

My understanding from the commentary on the Canadian DVD is that they used an HD DI, which is why it's so surprising the previous releases were SD upscaled.

I looked at the Korean release of Irreversible that just came out, no straight cut but it's region free and pretty attractively packaged. The master was nice looking, and the lossless audio retained the low frequency rumbling through the beginning of the movie.

EDIT: only just saw the press release, it is only a bluray. But still great!
Wouldn't be much point bringing Irreversible to 4k blu ray as it was only shot using 16mm film. The benefits would be minimal over a well handled blu ray disc.

The sound on the other hand would benefit from a Dolby Atmos or DTS X track. As there is actually alot of low frequency effects in the music around 20hz that they used to heighting the panic.

There have been quite a few 4K masters of 16mm movies Released on BD and UHD), they look great too, but like you said it would be minimal.

The original Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Evil Dead are examples of movies shot on 16mm and released on 4K UHD BD. The benefits may be not be big, but they are still there.

What happened to this release? Was it postponed because of the pandemic? Does anyone know anything...?
