Finally watched this tonight. All the positive comments regarding the transfer rang true for me. The green foliage was lush and colorful as well as anything red. A very nice transfer for one of my all time favorite films. The HDR “shines” in the spectral highlights and low lit scenes.

I have probably seen this movie upwards of 20 times and it is STILL effective. It’s a slow burn, but once things are set in motion there is a building tension that is harrowing. I don’t know how Kubrick got that performance out of Danny Lloyd given how young he was. Absolutely chilling.

So glad that this classic film got the UHD presentation it deserves! Time to bring on The Thing in UHD!

interesting comment by Gary re 2 versions
Quote:
These cut versions were personally edited and approved by Stanley Kubrick himself -
indeed, he apparently favors the shorter cut now AFTER critics reviews.
Personally, I don't like adjusting your 'art' to appeal to critical comments
and am glad the longer one is still available on Region 1 DVD.

Cinema 1 locations in Ontario has been getting multiple copies in and selling out pretty quickly, as well as Bay St. Video in downtown Toronto. If there's a Sunrise Records near you, they'll probably still have copies because they're asking $37.99 for it.

I finally found a copy at a local Walmart today after a couple weeks of having no luck on release week (though Gremlins and Zombieland were pretty easy to find), so with any luck it starts showing up at others, too. The same Walmart also had Gremlins and Scarface. The annoying thing about them is that they no longer list movies on their website, so there's no way of knowing what they have other than calling or actually going in person. They frequently surprise me at the titles they do get, however.

Now I just need Pan's Labyrinth from that week, which I'll likely pick up down in Buffalo this weekend.

I bought mine from Sunrise Records. I bought the steelcase for $37.99 simply because they want the regular packing for also $37.99.

I stopped going to the Regals near me because they never clean the screens. Most screens just have a layer of filth. Not a little, but the whole screen. 2 of the screens at the AMC I frequent have scratches on the screens. I don’t think we should cry for the theater chains, they make money by serving their overpriced concessions. They don’t care about viewers they want to make sure you come in and pay. They don’t make sure the quality is there they want quantity.

Is it the screen itself, or the projection window? I thought exactly the same about one of the local Regal theaters. Then I realized the plate BEHIND me through which they were projecting was not clean, and made some of the screens look foggy/dirty/damaged. Looking behind me, I could see that the plate looked to have residue that was exactly like what I was seeing on the screen.

That said, that's a pretty simple thing to clean and watch out for. Though I must admit, it's possible they have figured it out because those same screens now look fine, but for months I hesitated if a movie was on one of those screens, because I knew I would be seeing a dirty/blurry image. (and yes, it was only a few of the 13 that they have at this Regal, not every one of of them, just these few).

Is it that bad? Not even a marginal improvement over the BD? I don't own the film at all at the moment, so it's either the UHD or the Criterion, I guess.

Yeah, I faced that same choice at the Sunrise at Cloverdale Mall in Etobicoke. I knew I'd be driving down to the US this week, though, and the same steelbook was still available at multiple locations for a bit less after conversion, and the regular edition for even less. So I held off. $37.99 for a catalog title like this just seemed too ridiculous; Sunrise's pricing can either be decent, or WAY out of whack, depending on the title.

The Walmart I found it at today was at Erin Mills Town Centre in Mississauga; at $30 I figured it was a decent enough price that it was worth buying locally. Hopefully Walmart registers enough 4K sales to keep stocking them. Maybe one day they'll even start listing them online again.

It’s basically a wash. It gets as much wrong as it does right, so you have to pick your poison. If you don’t already own it, then the UHD will suffice, but I would honestly wait for a sale. Spending anything over $15 for it is, in my opinion, getting hosed.

Has anyone ordered the film from Amazon in the last few days?

If so did this still come with a slipcover? I didn't order it right away, and I tend to like getting the slip, so if they're already at the second batch and it no longer comes with the slip I might just wait to pick one up at a store later on.

Despite being a big horror film fan as a kid, I never really heard of The Shining until Twister came out in 1996. It made me curious about the film and I saw it on TNT a short time later. I was 15 at the time and I took to it right off.

I didn’t appreciate this until I was older. I grew up on slashers thinking that was horror.
