And I lean towards choosing 3D then, sometimes there is a break like how it was announced right away that MI Fallout would have the expanded ratio on its home release (even though I don’t think the effect is quite the same at home) so knew to go for 3D which I wasn’t sure would be possible at home, or how I saw Captain Marvel first in Real D and then in IMAX laser to get both, but don’t think Maleficent is the type of movie I would see twice in theaters.

The ironic part of it being opened up for Bladerunner 2049 was that it was a studio decision and not of the filmmakers. Hell, DP Roger Deakins said to see it in a proper 2D screen.

I fit's not shot to open up and they decide to do so then that's some studio money grabbing technique, not what the filmmakers wanted.

Saw Maleficent in IMAX 3D earlier this week and this was a case where I thought the open matte presentation didn't do the framing of the film any favors... My thoughts on the film aside it's a pretty good looking film, but the amount of headroom/negative space throughout seemed pretty jarring tbh...

The action sequences fared pretty well, but dialogue sequences and such really had a weird amount of room in the framing that really showcased the fact that it was framed for 2.39.

I guess with an alternating aspect ratio it bothers me a lot less (they usually at least take their pick of what scenes look good opened up or stick to action sequences), but this is a problem that I've had with a lot of films opened up for the entire runtime.

Will The Rise of Skywalker have native 15-perf footage *and* go full-frame in the Imax version? TFA had both, TLJ only had the former.

I’m trying to decide whether to go with the “regular” version at the Uptown or spring for laser at Air&Space DC when tickets go on sale tonight.

As far as I know, Rise of Skywalker is being filmed in 35mm. Next year I believe No Time to Die, Wonder Woman 1984, and Tenet are shooting with IMAX film cameras.

Yes, they will have both. I don't think there are too many 1.90:1 LIMAX rooms with Laser Projectors, it will be interesting.

At first they told me they were just getting new seats and a new projector but I called recently and they said EVERYTHING had been gutted. They are hoping to be open for Rise of Skywalker.

My first showing there will be free since they owe me a ticket from when their air conditioner wasn't working during Spiderman Far From Home. It was so hot I was sweating just sitting there. They even PAUSED the movie and offered refunds to everyone, whether they stayed or left.

Does anyone know where a list of upcoming IMAX releases would be? Their website seems spotty at best.

If you are looking for movies filmed with an IMAX film camera:

No Time to Die
Wonder Woman 1984
Tenet

The Milford location will have its existing IMAX Digital screen upgraded to laser, while the Daly City location will be a new IMAX laser install.

The Century theater in Daly City already has an XD large format auditorium.

When the trailer dropped last night, Kodak tweeted that it had been shot in both 35mm and 65mm. They deleted the tweet and put one up today that just says 35mm. https://twitter.com/Kodak_ShootFilm/...37297942441985

Looks like no large format this time.

I really can't see why a film lover would want to shoot 35mm over 65mm for a big budget film like Star Wars.

No STAR WARS film has ever been entirely shot in 65MM. Very little for Episodes VI & VII and both Solo & Rogue One were shot digitally. The fact that they're still using 35MM at all is a miracle since Episode II marked the beginning of using digital for major "A" list motion pictures.

The use of digital for Episode 2 was mostly a sign of Lucas wanting to experiment with cutting-edge technology, everything that has happened since he sold Lucasfilm has to do with Disney's priorities, I'm sure.

35 is not exactly 8mm though is it? I'd have thought that just shooting a major blockbuster on film would be enough to please people but nope, there it is.

Perhaps it's not a question of budget but aesthetics? JJ is a fiend for anamorphic and although you can shoot on 65 with a mild 1.25x anamorphosis using the Ultra Panatars it's not the same as the 2x glass designed for 4-perf 35. And QT gladly went back to 35 for OUATIH after Hateful 8, so it's not always about shooting on the cleanest, sharpest stuff available but evoking the texture and mood of the current story they're trying to tell. Even Roger Deakins - who's fallen in love with the Alexa LF and who's got no time for people using dodgy old glass for aesthetic effect - still likes to shoot with a very high ISO in order to retain a bit of texture on his movies.

from what I've read Cinemark's XD screens are Barco laser projectors for a while now; Auro surround sound though, why ??

The logistics would be a factor. JJ had to make the movie in a relatively short timeframe since he was brought on so late. Using large format film across an entire movie would have taken more time and made for a more difficult workflow. Especially with reshoots.

And also 2x anamorphic as Geoff D pointed out because JJ loves the qualities of those lenses.
