Seconded, one of the best silent films I've seen, just fantastic. I hope A Cottage on Dartmoor gets the Blu-ray treatment at some point.

Only bought that less than a week ago when it was £11 something. On the bright side I used the 5 off 25 code and at it's current price I would have had to add something extra. So shouldn't complain.

Again at base.com, Inner Sanctums: The Quay Brothers Short Films is down to £8.29:

https://www.base.com/buy/product/qua...c-bfib1236.htm

The outer box is a bit flimsy (my copy bought a few years ago arrived unscathed), and the 42 page booklet is separate in the box, with the 2 disc Amaray separate.

[Show spoiler]

Marvelous film. Probably my favourite non-fantastical non-documentary silent. And not just because it features lots of trains. But to be frank that helps.

Cyrano de Bergerac coming 17th February. Hopefully they're using the newer restoration.

March releases are up on Amazon:

Quote:
Sunday Bloody Sunday (Blu-ray)
Directed by John Schlesinger

Peter Finch and Glenda Jackson star in John Schlesinger's piercing and brilliantly observed suburban drama.

A recent divorcée (Jackson) and middle-aged Jewish doctor (Finch) find themselves embroiled in a progressive love triangle with a bisexual artist (Murray Head). Both discover a new freedom with their young lover, as they confront the convention and obstacles that have defined their lives.

An exploration of middle-class life and permissiveness in 1970s London, its depiction of homosexuality changed the landscape of LGBTQ+ representation on screen. Featuring outstanding BAFTA-winning performances by Finch and Jackson, Sunday Bloody Sunday is a tender and complex view on the politics of love, lust and longing.

Special features

Presentation in High Definition
The Pacemakers: Glenda Jackson (1971, 14 mins): a documentary profile of the actress Glenda Jackson, including footage of the actress performing on the set of Sunday Bloody Sunday
**FIRST PRESSING ONLY** Fully illustrated booklet with new writing on the film and full film credits
Other extras TBC

Quote:
Beat the Devil (DVD + Blu-ray)
Directed by John Huston

Humphrey Bogart stars in this classic adventure comedy directed by John Huston and written by Truman Capote.

One of a disparate group of fortune-seekers looking to claim uranium-rich land East Africa, a hard-up Billy Dannreuther (Bogart) faces the swindling machinations of his cohorts as they await passage from an Italian port. But with scheming and ruses aplenty, will this motley crew miss the boat completely...?

Presented in a new 4K restoration, this wry send-up of noir classics including Huston's own The Maltese Falcon - features an all-star cast including Jennifer Jones, Gina Lollobrigida and Peter Lorre .
Special features

Presented in High Definition and Standard Definiton
**FIRST PRESSING ONLY** Fully illustrated booklet featuring new writing on the film
Other extras TBC

Quote:
Tongues Untied (DVD + Blu-ray)
Directed by Marlon T Riggs

After its 1989 release and subsequent screening on public television, Tongues Untied polarised critics with its unapologetic portrayal of black gay experience in America. Part documentary, part performance, it was described as the film we have been waiting for by critic Cary Alan Johnson and vilified as a misuse of public funds by right-wing presidential hopeful Pat Buchanan. Such divided opinions were testament to the films lasting impact as a powerful depiction of the ongoing black liberation movement, twinned with devastation of the AIDS crisis. 30 years on, the poetry of Marlon Riggs himself, as well as performances from Essex Hemphill and Brian Freeman, comprise a unique record of a critical historical moment with fierce intelligence, virtuosic rhythm and courageous hope that still stuns today.

Special features

Presentation in High Definition and Standard definition
Anthem (1991, 9 mins): an experimental music video portraying a vibrant, exciting and defiant community of black gay men
Affirmations (1990, 10 mins): featuring the poetry of Essex Hemphill, this is a beautiful short film exploring the dreams, desires and fantasies of black gay men
Non, Je ne regrette rien (1992, 38 mins): a timely and illuminating documentary examining the impact of HIV and AIDS. There's fierce and fascinating insight at every turn, and a classic example of Rigg's formally distinctive style
**FIRST PRESSING ONLY** Fully illustrated booklet with new writing on Tongues Untied and the accompanying short films and full film credits
Other extras TBC

Did not expect BFI to be the one releasing Beat the Devil, but I will take it! Great news.

Sunday Bloody Sunday and Beat the Devil both look interesting, the other couple of confirmed today releases not so much. That said, unless they announce an unexpected biggie, Bait (https://store.hmv.com/film-tv/blu-ray/bait-(1)) will certainly be the BFI's best home video release of Q1 2020.

Beat The Devil for me as I love Bogart.
Sunday Bloody Sunday & Tongues United were a one time watch for me.

Beat the Devil and Sunday Bloody Sunday are cracking announcements, and Cosh Boy (out in February, Flipside 40) sounds terrific as well.

I didn't expect that we'd be waiting over a year since the release of Distant Voices, Still Lives for news of any upgrade for The Long Day Closes (can't imagine it needs further restoration after the Criterion, though that was done at 2K vs BFI's 4K transfer for DVSL) and the Terence Davies Trilogy. Hopefully they are coming at some point...

Very happy to finally get Schlesinger's Sunday Bloody Sunday over here (wanted to watch it for year but held out for a BD) and also great news they got Huston's Beat the Devil (surely via Sony, which could confirm a studio deal).

Cosh Boy now listed as January 20th 2020. Certainly of more interesting to me than Flipside 39, which I bought anyway.

Oh yeah, just noticed Judgment at Nuremberg too! Nice one, BFI. Was hoping someone would release this, and it's clear Eureka weren't (for some reason). They're even putting all the extras on a separate DVD to leave the BD for the film alone.

Also announced is Cyrano De Bergerac and Cosh Boy (already mentioned). Cool slate for early 2020. I'm definitely up for getting the Schlesinger and Kramer on release, and possibly the Huston too.

Didn't realise Cosh Boy (aka The Slasher) had been announced too as part of the flipside brand...that's a really good JD film, highly recomended.

You folks are sleeping on Tongues Untied. It's of-its-era, but in spite of its dated style it's still an incredible, powerful film. It's a shame they're not just doing a complete works of Marlon Riggs, though. All that's left is Black Is... Black Ain't, Ethnic Notions, and Color Adjustments though the rights to the last two are probably tricky.

Happy for Beat the Devil to finally get a release! I was holding out for a non-Twilight Time release with a better package. Here's hoping they can include the theatrical cut for curiosity's sake.

For the folks in the US who want to sample, Rigg's entire body of work is on Kanopy.
