Default Grain Issue [1080i vs 1080p]

Trust me, if I had the extra money to buy a 1080p HDTV I would, but I don't, so I just have to grin and bear it until I can. My question is this. Is grain on movies, such at the Patriot, less noticeable or not seen at all on your 1080p HDTV's?

I purchased the Patriot Saturday night due to the stunning reviews in regard to PQ and while I will attest to the fact that it is stunning in 90% of the movie...the beginning sky shots on my 1080i HDTV showed the grainy or "1,000 mosquito effect" and just plain pissed me off that it somewhat ruined my watching of the movie for awhile. I noticed that, again, mostly in the beginning shots of the sky this grainy effect and it would creep up and now and again on shots that had a blurry background to them.

Sorry, admin, I posted this in the wrong forum...if you could move it please to the correct forum.

Do you have sharpen turned on at all? If so, does turning it off help?

What make of TV do you have? Is it a Samsung? What output do you have the BD player set to? 1080i?

big difference for me. on my sony 1080p, that grain is almost non-existant. I really have to try hard to find it.

With my 32" samsung at 1080i, the movie experience really blows due to the graininess.

Ok, well, that sounds like that is my issue then...the 1080i shows off more grain than 1080p...

So, I assume you have the Patriot movie? If so, then at the very beginning shots that show the sky with the sun setting, there is no grain?

I don't have any sharpening on that I am aware of, but I will check tomorrow...thanks for the advice there. I have a Hitachi HDTV, 1080i and the HDMI output is set to automatic on my PS3.

Hmm... I seem to recall seeing a lot of "grain" on live broadcasts looking at store units that output 1080i too. It kind of looked like Floyd-steinberg dithering.

I have a 720p LCD display that accepts 1080i signal but I have not noticed significant noise with any of my BD discs played through my PS3 but of course that is through component.

apart from any i/p issue or blue channel issues, grain can be more apparent in even tone areas, like a smooth sky, in photography.

I had the opposite experience with my Samsung HL-S6187W. I was watching Tomb Raider the other day, and just out of curiosity I decided to see how the movie would look in 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. I tested each, and in 1080p the grain was much more pronounced than the other resolutions. It didn't matter to me since I like the grain. I could be wrong, but based on my experience I'd have to say 1080p revealed more grain since it's technically the higher quality resolution.

What Hitachi is it? I've got a 42 Hitachi 1080i (model in my sig) and it has a bad HD picture. I got the sharp 1080p (in my sig) and the difference was unbelievable.

Not saying Hitachi are bad just that some of the cheaper ones can be quite poor.

I see some grain on certain shots from time to time on some movies, but it doesn't seem to bother me to much. I remember the good ole VHS days, now that's quality

I get that motion-blur crap too with my Samsung set to 1080i.

But who am I to complain I got it two years ago for under $1000

...perhaps it's time for an upgrade

Unfornunately no, it's the opposite. You will see more grain at 1080p. Filmgrain is a naturaly occurance with analog medium, meaning that the movie was fillmed on standard analog based film. This grain also known as film grain will be transfered to a Digital Master, unless they decide that ey want to remove it, however film grain is desired by most directors. In some cases they add film grain to movies filled on newer Digital Cameras. Why you ask? Because they like. It's more of an artistic flair than anthing else.

Most people don't notice film grain on DVD because the resolution is too low. Much like how TV was before the flat panel revolution, no one could tell that grain was there, expecialy at 480i.

High contrast, High resolution, combined with film grain = salty videophiles.
