Seems like a marketing gimmick so far, since it's Superman and Jor-El stored his messages on crystals.

I imagine Superman was chosen for that reason, however the technology itself seems promising. I'm sure they invested a fair amount of money in this, and it's nice to see Warner still cares about film preservation.
