There was a lot of competition in terms of the other Horror films released that year in 1979. There was a famous Newsweek magazine article about it something along the lines of "1979- Summer of the Horror film". I remember the buzz around the Dracula film, Alien,etc., but the one I remember the biggest buzz was around Phantasm. That's the one everyone was talking about, at the time, at least among everyone I knew. I remember Prophecy as being underwhelming in comparison to most of the other horror films released that year, and something of a misfire considering all the talent involved with the film. Years later I still view it as a mediocre film, although it has its redeeming qualities, and I've always remembered the monster bear attack on the campers in the woods, particularly the infamous sleeping bag death scene.

What this movie most reminds me of is the girl I was involved with at the time. This has caused me to have a "rose colored glasses" nostalgic view of Prophecy that is more about her than the movie. I dragged her to all these horror movies. Bless her heart she always went with me. She eventually got tired of it. We got into a fight over going to see The Fog when it came out.
