Interesting cover choice. For those that have seen both films, you know that Danny was nothing like his Father when it comes to the cover choice.

We always carry bits and pieces of our parents inside us, whether we acknowledge it or not. The connection is there in the movie, and not just superficially.

I prefer the yellow poster simply because it's subtle, the yellow colour immediately grabs your attention and the image establishes Dan's unavoidable connection with his father.

It got a bit too close for me since I remember being traumatised by being made to see a baby goat being ritualistically murdered to "feed" a goddess when I was 4-5 years old.

Doctor Sleep's scene took me back to that agonising mental plane. Plus, there was this realisation that ritualistic murders, whether of baby animals or human children, still happen in the world today.
Apart from this scene, I loved the movie.
Doctor Sleep didn't and hasn't "tanked", "bombed" or "flopped". It just didn't take the top spot or make as much money as the overdone effects-driven pile of **** known as Midway. Doctor Sleep was #2, though, which is not a bad place to be when people tire of Midway, which they will VERY soon.

Ok. I deserved this angry response to my post.
However, you didn't notice that I was talking about my specific emotional reaction to that scene which made me relish in the fact that it flopped. You also ignored the fact that in the same post I said I "loved" that movie. A movie's box office does not influence or deter me from catching it at the cinema. Otherwise, I wouldn't have seen it on the big screen. I haven't seen Midway in the theatres and won't. I prefer slow-burn character-driven movies flashy to CGI-filled ones anyway. I had the option of watching Terminator, Doctor Sleep or Midway and I chose 'Doctor Sleep' over those.
My reaction was brought on by the severity of that scene. It does not reflect my attitudes towards the entire feature, which I think was really well done.

It is a flop, though. It made about half it's projected opening weekend haul and it's on pace to be in the red. I do think it's a shame that a solid movie like Doctor Sleep is struggling when there have been some pretty terrible horror movies that have made a ton of money in the last few years, but the fact is that the movie has significantly underperformed and folks aren't just going to start seeing it because they're tired of the alternative options.

On the one hand I commend the filmmakers for making a such a strange film. It was a big risk making a long movie that is A) a sequel to a 40-year old film that was a drastic departure from its source material and B) an adaptation of a book that was also a belated sequel to the very same book that was drastically departed from by the movie that this is a sequel to (just trying to explain it is confusing). So on the other hand, they released a nearly 3-hour film that practically requires close familiarity with not only an old movie but also a book that not a lot of their target audience was going to have read. It's pretty amazing that this movie exists and is as good as it is, but at the same time it's hard to imagine a scenario where it wasn't going to flop, which it did.

Yeah... I'm currently reading the book and saw the film opening night -- I'm a fan of Flanagan, in general. It's just that most of his recent stuff (Gerald's Game, Haunting of Hill House, Hush?) has been running on Netflix -- and it's one thing to get praise/buzz on a streaming network (where people get access to your film through a monthly fee while planting their butts on their sofa) and actually draw people to theaters on opening weekend for higher ticket costs. I'm not sure if Flanagan is that kind of director.

I think the drinking (as a lifelong problem) and the connect between Danny and his dad could have been hammered harder... or at least in more specificity. Like, REALLY drive home how much he's his father's son; King has the luxury of words so he can spell it out repeatedly, film resorts to other means. There was a great scene in the last half hour or so that nailed it, but more earlier-- I felt like I had to read in some things based on my prior knowledge of The Shining (book and film).

I'm glad I saw the film in the theater and I did smile at various points, there was some decent material and nice throwbacks to The Shining. Acting was decent (Ferguson was great.) And the True Knot stuff was definitely creepy/intense. It's just the film did not feel as emotionally affecting as I had anticipated. Yet I'm not really sure how it could have been improved and/or drawn a larger crowd. Part of the reason The Shining has such a following (I think) is because it's Kubrick.

Curious to see what the 4K transfer will look like.

The fact that this has bombed financially really really sucks. Maybe Warner's can sell it to Netflix or Amazon for exclusive Streaming and shrink that 30 million dollar loss.
(Edit) just read that Warner's had greenlit a sequel to this, so we would have gotten to see more of Abra's character develop soooo, totally bumming now

I turned my mom from seeing this (she can't handle violent movies, so i had warn her about that one scene) and that was even hard for her. My parents never heard of this movie till i mentioned it.

Im doing my part. Seen it 3 times.

I'm going for my 3rd time on Tuesday. Saw it my second time with my dad last Tuesday and he loved it. He's a huge fan of the book and felt the film did an excellent job of adapting it. He said he can see why the general public didnt latch on though since it's a film that makes you think which sadly has a very difficult time working especially in this day and age.

If it is bombing, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Ewen McGregor is partly to blame.

Cheating on his wife and kids and helping break up Mary Elizabeth Winstead's marriage and good girl image isn't doing him any favours at all.

Just got back from seeing this and I have to say its a damn good movie. Probably my favorite of the year. The Shining is one of my favorite moves and this is definitely worthy of standing next to it.

Studios need to just start making and releasing films on Netflix or Hulu. A film like Doctor Sleep probably would done huge ratings like Haunting of Hill House.

This film is probably going to do real well in digital rentals I would think. Ultimately it'll break even and maybe even be profitable. Just not in the theater.

Come on already. The ending was a joke. All that thrown in just to appeal to fans of the Kubrick film.
[Show spoiler]Oh, that was the fastest fire truck in history especially given the location. Also, did they really need to go back to the hotel? Danny could have unlocked his boxes anywhere, no? Did I miss something?

Who cares if it bombed. Is money coming out of your pocket? Why do fans care how much money a movie makes? You're not getting rich off it. I remember the days when we simply talked about how much we enjoyed a movie but now it's all about the numbers. By the way, THE SHINING bombed when it was released.
