Wonder Woman is the only one of that list that I’ve seen and I don’t recall disliking anything about the image. In fact, I just checked and it looks like it was shot on 35mm film. What makes you say they added fake grain?

Wonder Woman was shot on a mix of digital and Super 35. So fake grain would have been added to the digitally-sourced shots to give it a consistent appearance.

Maybe there's already a thread for this, but on the flip side, does anyone have any blu-rays that are particularly improved when watched on a UHD player, or do all blu-rays "generally" look better on those players as you get the full potential out of the 1080p quality?
Anyone try watching DVDs? Basically, I'm thinking I'd replace my DVD films with UHD, and only my favourite blu-ray films with UHD too. |

Just a few Blu’s where upscaling looks really damn terrific:
- Suspiria (Synapse) - The Thing (Arrow, but it’s also available Region A in Shout Factory’s steelbook) - Wages of Fear (BFI) - Sleeping Beauty (Disney, there’s tons of great Disney animated transfer’s, all in the Platinum and Diamond List, and Alice in Wonderland (which isn’t), The Muppets (& most Disney live action Blockbusters since then) - The Apu Trilogy (Criterion) - Baraka (MPI Media Group) - Samsara (although 4K, HDR & Atmos version is out digitally) - Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams (Criterion) - The General (BFI, the best Silent film treatment to date, it’s also available by Cohen) - Deep Red (Arrow) - Donnie Darko (Arrow) - Possession (Mondo) - Rise of the Guardians - City of the Living Dead (Arrow) - All Studio Ghibli (Disney/ Shout Factory) - The Trouble With Harry (I find this and Topaz the most stunning Hitchcock transfer’s, and I’ve seen all of the ones currently available) - Creepshow (Shout Factory) - Petey Wheatstraw (Vinegar Syndrome) - La Dolce Vita (Criterion) - A Matter of Life and Death (Criterion) - Tree of Life (Criterion, or get 7.1 with 20th Century Fox) - Candyman (Arrow) - The Exorcist (WB) - Blade of the Immortal - Endless Poetry (Artificial Eye) - Dawson City Frozen Time (doesn’t matter which Region you watch, both are stunning) - Bride of Frankenstein (Universal studios, there’s a lot of stunning transfer’s in the box sets, this is the best IMO). - The Archers Criterion’s (and a lot of other Technicolor films on Blu, if Scorsese’s company is involved, you can assume greatness, Tales of Hoffmann (Region B) is probably my favourite Powell/ Pressburger transfer) - 100 Years of Olympics (Criterion) - Kubo and the Two Strings (Universal/ E1) - Pieces & I Drink your Blood (Grindhouse Releasing) - Song of the Sea (Universal) - Melies Fairy Tales in Color (Flicker Alley) - Empire Strikes Back (20th Century Fox) - Fire Walk With Me (same transfer between Criterion and Paramount, putting a recommendation also for Paramount TV sets; Star Trek, and Twilight Zone, they look amazing, Batman (Adam West series) looks amazing, and obviously Game of Thrones) - Casablanca - Gone With The Wind - The Searchers & Rio Bravo - Quay Brothers Collection (With Nolan short ‘Quay’) - Bonnie and Clyde (WB) - Ben-Hur & The Ten Commandments (WB) - Pulp Fiction & Jackie Brown - Aliens (new restoration) - Fanny & Alexander, Persona, Wild Strawberries, Autumn Sonata, The Seventh Seal (First Blu release) (Criterion) - The Early Works of Rainer Werner Fassbinder (Arrow), Despair (Olive) - Everything Olive Signature (Johnny Guitar, High Noon, Letter from an Unknown Woman, etc. ) - Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (Eureka/ 20th Century Fox) - Man With a Movie Camera (Eureka) - Zerkalo & Ivan’s Childhood (Artificial Eye) - Jacquot de Nantes (Artificial Eye) - Goldfinger, From Russia With Love, Dr. No (MGM) Added: - The Master (the first 65mm film since Branagh’s Hamlet (1996), it’s the best PTA Blu-Ray transfer to date. - 20th Century Women (Lionsgate) - Playtime (Original Criterion release, also 70mm) Added Added: - My Fair Lady (50th Anniversary, just read here: The 65mm source photography has been restored in 4K from an 8K scan, with 96k resolution; it looks completely stunning (as expected), but both of my discs had issues due to the case, hate the diamond luxe cases, Gravity is scratched also, just import them instead, in a amaray case). Almost all of these companies mentioned are known for quality, it depends on the TV set you have, calibration, size, and whether or not it’s a Sony (A9G will have the best currently available upscaling on a 4K set). I’m using 2 LG’s E6 & B8 (and I’m still impressed with my parent’s 65” XBR850c, so I can see where the love for the x900 comes in). My first 8K tv will be a Sony. Unless they mess up somehow. not in any order. these just really stand out to me.
immortal engines Robin Hood (2018 4k) Aquaman Pacific Rim (2013) immortal engines really caught me off guard with its picture quality. I am partial to Pacific Rim as being reference material because it was my first experience with 4K. I was not prepared whatsoever for the clarity and that feeling like you are standing there present, you know? like your TV is a window, not a screen. |

I have a lot off of this list, and have to agree for the most part with what they have come up so far as they do make updates to it. I am surprised Spider-Man FFH is not on there though as my jaw dropped several times watching that. They go into the technical aspects of the movies as well.

My set up in the living room for watching my bluray movies is a PS4 paired with Sony's XBR 810C. I found that I am rewatching many of my bluray movies again because I'm enjoying how they all looked upscaled. I'm not sure if it's the PS4 that's doing the upscaling or if it's my XBR 810C (2015). The TV is known for having an excellent upscaling engine. It upscales to near 4K according to the TV reviews. And on the TV box itself, it said in big bold letters in the middle "Upscales Everything." Does anyone know if the PS4 is doing the upscaling work or if it's the TV, or both? |

My viewing of Avatar was just the opposite of yours, and I have a Vizio M70-D3. I was just commenting to a friend yesterday that I thought a 4K rendition of this movie would have a minimum effect (and I don't say that often), based on how I thought it looked now as an upscale on my tv.

the new Arrow edition of 'An American Werewolf in London' and Blue Underground's "New York Ripper" upscaled look fantastic
I think the revised and import edition of "Playtime" are superior over the first Criterion edition. |
