It was $26.99 a few years ago, I think it was a Best Buy Deal of the Day or something. I dunno if it's the cheapest it's EVER been, but it's definitely the cheapest I can remember it ever being (that's when I bought it).

The algorithm that skims the prices apparently can't pick up prices that are temporary (like Price errors or very brief PM to another site) or lasts too short of a period. More importantly LD are applied like a coupon at the end of checkout so 3-camel can't filter coupons or B2G1 or 3 for $30 type deals.

3-camel says the lowest price for the 2012 release in $25.99.

So I saw a screening of Return of the King Extended Edition at Imax last night. Now, despite the fact that I thought that just in general these movies need a desperate remaster and tidy up, there was one other thing I noticed. Now I can't be 100% sure, but I am like 95% sure, that what I saw last night was a 1080p presentation of Return of the King, not blu-ray but DCP. Now my Imax in Melbourne is one of the reasonably larger ones, particularly for the southern hemisphere, they have a 4K laser projector and 1570 film projector both, and I find it hard to believe that they would be using a DCP that was lower quality because of the restrictions of the cinema, it must be the restrictions of the master.
Now again, I can't be 100% sure, but I'm pretty sure that maybe, just maybe, the extended editions have only been mastered in High Definition, not even 2K let alone 4K.
Now in the event of a 4K blu-ray release of the extended editions, I am not quite cynical enough to believe they'd try and push out a 1080p master on a 4K disc, so at the very least, they would have to regrade the films and with any luck, utilise the existing 4K scans of the negatives or do fresh 6K scans (which I admit, is pretty damn wishful of me). However there were a few shots I noticed that were sourced from prints rather than negatives, particularly noticeable is the shot of Theoden in Dunharrow saying "Duty?" see screens, first is of previous shot, second is of shot in question, note the grain pattern, edges and colours:

Anyway, I could be totally wrong this is pure speculation the lot of it but there you go.

Best Buy has this for 29.99 which is a fantastic price. My question is this, I have never seen these films but have the Harry Potter collection and love those films. Since this is such a good price is it worth a blind buy? I just bought the David Lean directs Noel Coward collection from Criterion and BATMAN the animated series and there are still a few blu ray’s I want to buy on Black Friday.

All three of the LotR films are still in the IMDb top 15 (of the top 250 list):

https://www.imdb.com/chart/top?pf_rd_m=A2FGELUUNOQJNL

You can always tell who's read the books vs those who haven't by them being tripped up by the so-called false endings. It ain't over until the boat sails.

Eh?

I never even read the books, yet never had an issue with the ending.

Without the endings, Frodo's character arc would never conclude. If it ended with Aragorn's coronation it would be extremely unsatisfactory for the Hobbit characters, the scene literally ends with Frodo giving a sad smile, then the Grey Havens scene ends with Frodo giving a happy knowing smile.
Just because the action's over doesn't mean the story's over.

I never had a problem with the endings! In theaters and to the extended editions!

I sold this set off years ago but decided to order it again for $30 from Best Buy yesterday. Does anyone know if it still has the hardcased outer shell with the fold out map or is it just the three cases in a box like the Hobbit rerelease?

The version I just picked up in store was the hard case with the fold out

They switched it over to the simple box (like The Hobbit extended trilogy) a while back, but I still see the old fold-out style box on store shelves. If you want that particular case, you should probably get a copy in-store; if you order it online, there's a good chance you'll probably get a newer release.

The Hobbit extended trilogy in the fold-out box is really difficult to find. I haven't seen one in-store for ages. It probably had a lower initial print run than the LOTR trilogy.

The Extended trilogy is on Google Play for about $25 right now. Not sure if its a Cyber Monday deal or not. Good price as each movie separately is $14.99 (CAD).

Hope this is not to far off-topic, but re: the green tint issue, I noticed that the version streaming on amazon (Germany, but I guess they use the same transfer everywhere) appears not to have the color grading issue or the other problems like this one (screenshot in the middle):

The one on amazon also has hard coded english subtitles, unlike the Blu-ray. So there is another HD transfer out there. iTunes version is the same as the Blu-ray by the way.

I hope the green tint is a thing from the past once we have the Extended UHDs!

You sold this set a long time ago, and you just re-purchased it again? It doesn't make sense.
