Yeah, that sounds more like it.

That’s a whole lot more than “a handful”. LOL.

Okay, so i think im in the middle right now in regards to streaming/physical discs...

im only buying titles that I think are best enjoyed on a bigger screen on bluray, and everything else will probably be bought digitally (iTunes)

The problem with that is everything is better enjoyed on a big screen on Blu-ray.

I don't even know what a handful even means. And I have no idea what he believes is needed to take advantage of UHD BD.

If we asked how many have a 4k display what do you think will be the % how about 4k projector? 4k projector in a dedicated HT? professionally calibrated 4k projector in a dedicated HT? professionally calibrated yearly high end 4k projector in a dedicated HT that has very dark and neutral walls?

one can always make the conditions more stringent and make that number ever smaller.

On the flip sight I think a 1080p TV can still benefit from UHD BD, so that would be almost anyone. Now if the person cares or not that is a different story.

Somewhere, in a different galaxy, there are people who appreciate quality in their masses, not just a niche.

Bruce has posted some latest figures over at the Home Media Thread. As I suspected, not hugely good news for UHD. Subscription is the big winner as expected.

4K disc sales grew 70% last year and 11% after three quarters of 2019 with the 4th quarter and its holiday spending still not factored in. Purchases overall continue to decline, but not with me; I do what I can.

Yeah, that’s some drop off though. Like Bruce says, it could peak as early as next year. Like Digital HD, it looks like it could have a short shelf life.

Maybe we should store them in the freezer then to keep them fresher longer?

4K discs were always going to be a niche within a niche market. How could they not be when many people still find DVD quality to be more than acceptable? 4K discs are for those that want the best and those that want the best are always in the minority in almost every product category.

Plenty of specialty products are made and sold; 4K discs will be fine.

Lots of UHD/4K Blu-ray titles under $20 here. Many are $15 or less and several are $10 or less. If someone had said 30 years ago that we would have 3840 x 2160 movie titles on disc with 12 channels of lossless audio in 2020 we would have tried to have them committed.

The Irishman was fantastic. Here's hoping some of you put your disdain for digital media on hold and experience one of the best films of the year. Outside of Criterion (remotely) putting the film out on disc - don't hold your breath for a physical copy any time soon.

I guarantee you this film will be released on disc. Patience is a virtue.

YTF did Scorsese only release The Irishman digitally on Netflix? Is there not going to be a DVD or Blu-ray release?

Click here for a list of production companies and distributors. Note the absence of a major US studio, Paramount was involved but bowed out. Most likely this title will not get exhibited in the US and who knows what the contracts say about disc release.

Netflix purchased the rights for $105 million and financed the films budget for $159 million after others dropped out.

Because the studios didn't want to finance the film, so Netflix came to the rescue. Even Marty knows that if digital and a very limited theatrical release is all you get then you take the deal and get your movie made. I don't see a physical release happening unless Criterion get involved like they did with Roma, but I think the terms are/were less complicated with that than they are with The Irishman.
