Even if you've got just basic cable (in our city, we're behind a mountain, and need cable just to get the networks), you don't need to get the Digital On-Demand package they'll try and push in your face--
Just find a set with a built-in QAM tuner, and you should be able to plug your cable into the TV input and find any HD Big Six network affiliates in the area....Or ATSC tuner if you can pick them up off the air. (With luck, they're usually just off the regular SD channels, eg. "CBS channel 10.1".)
If you've got the affiliates in your area, you're pretty well set, as most all of prime-time programming has switched to HD widescreen by now except for the reality shows, and even Oprah, Dr. Phil and Jeopardy.

Meanwhile, I'll just sit here and burn with jealousy over countries that have actual Disney HD channels--
Over here in North Ameri-cay, we've still got a nominally upconverted spinoff of THAT Disney Channel, which shows absolutely nothing Disney-related between the Hanna Montana reruns.
