manipulative? Of course! Isn't that what a lot of filmmaking is about?
The director films scenes to create reactions-- fear, sad, happy, etc.
If the movie accomplishes this then it works-- there certaintly have been
plenty of movies that fail miserably in these catagories..
Emotional response should be earned, rather than pushing buttons IMO

How much more emotional can you get that Forrest Gump? I mean honestly to say that is the lowest common denominator doesn't make one bit of sense to me.

It was copied most recently in Benjamin Button which almost won.

If you want to call the subsequent work by the same screenwriter a "copy"...

Do you mean how much more emotional can you fake than Forrest Gump?
It was like there was a timer set to go off every 20 minutes and then there'd be a plot point/scene formulated to make you go "awwww......".
As Jeff says, pushing buttons.

No, it was very real. That was the strength. Using somebody average. Things happen in life. Bad things do. It showed how an ordinary man handled success and low points in his life. That film did a great job of showing that.

I hate to get off topic, but "forrest gump" is one of my favorite movies. I have watched it probably 20 times and it still sucks me in as 100% believable. The part when Forrest finds out he has a son and asks "is he, is he.... (stupid like me)" gets me every time.

Unfortunately, the sequal was the complete opposite, no matter what Forrest and his son did, they were destined to fail.

Aww man. I'm sorry I missed that. I think Baseketball was the movie that surprised me the most. It was much funnier than expected

Sort of the opposite of Cannibal, the Musical, then? Boy, was that one a disappointment for me! I thought it was going to be hilarious... one solid laugh in the whole thing. I walked away wondering how anybody ever gave Parker and Stone another dime to make something with. Sure glad somebody did, though!

I laughed through that whole movie! Come on, the snowman song! I was rollign on the floor, and the guy that just wouldn't die, the opening scene, you get to see where a ton of stuff from South Park came from including Kyle's hair.

And don't forget
"The sky is blue, and all the leaves are green.
My heart is full as a baked potato.
I think you know exactly what I mean!"

It's the tune that finished every South Park episode for like the first 8 seasons.

From the Bits:

Okay... it's come to our attention that a number of readers have been having trouble reading The Bits since we had a brief outage on Sunday night. It appears that we might be having some DNS issues, so rest assured we've got Chuck and the Nerd Herd working on it now. We should be able to get it all straightened out over the weekend.
