Ok. There is a bit of a quirk with some Elite's where the tv has to be on before you turn on the AVR, otherwise it won't detect the tv and output video. Mine does this occasionally, but I set a delay up on my universal remote and has largely eliminated this. If its not this, or a combination of that with an assignment issue:

again, you should be able to see the menu items on the AVR screen

Hit Setup on your remote
Then use the directional pad on the remote to go down to 6. Input Setup
Enter (center button)
This is where you can assign. My receiver has 'HDMI 1, HDMI 2, and BD' as HDMI input options.
The left/right directional pad cycles through the inputs.
HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 will allow you to rename or change power triggers by using the down directional pad, then left/right.
If you want your tv assigned to the TV Sat or DVR input, then you will get other options when you press the down button (Digital in -OFF, HDMI Input -assign to where your cable is plugged in with directional left/right, Component In -OFF)
I just looked at his manual also - the only ones that are assignalbe are 1 and 2 (as you stated).

OP - Put your PS3 in the BD HDMI slot (ask one of the PS3 users how to set your PS3 up - it will need to be set for LPCM audio - not bitstream.

Put your Oppo DVD player into Hdmi 1

Only connect these 2 things at this time.

Under your HDMI audio option make sure that Through is NOT SELECTED. Make sure that HDMI Control is set to off (you have a Sony TV) and make sure that your resolution setting is set to Auto. Don't give up hope yet. It will be worth the trouble.
