I hoped to catch this in IMAX...and then I find out it's limited release, an Amazon release. This should have been a wide release, totally missed out on my cash.

Disagree, but never mind. I'm glad I didn't know before I saw the movie. Yes it's a minor thing, but it's a nice little frisson you're robbing people of. Why do that when spoiler tags are available?

In the UK we got a more normal/wider release but apparently the price for that is it's not getting a home release until at least March.... swing and roundabouts I guess... It did look great in IMAX, I'm sorry you missed out on that.

Did you honestly think that Felicity Jones was throwing a dog to its death in front of hundreds of Fair goers? Because it's not a damn spoiler.

Spoilery-explanation why I think it is a spoiler in spoiler tags :

[Show spoiler]It actually is a spoiler IMHO. It's foreshadowing exactly how they survive at the end of the movie, if you think about it. The dog could have landed on a trampoline, or water, or something else. And the moment itself is unexpected when it happens, unless someone on an internet forum has told you about it already.

And I'm done arguing about it now. You won't put it in spoiler tags, ok, that's your choice, I was only asking/suggesting.

Merry Christmas.

How else
[Show spoiler]were they going to survive a freefall in a balloon
? You're being ridiculous, trampolines weren't even invented yet. Water? Where?. Not unexpected if you have common sense. But yeah, I'm done too, Merry Christmas.

What height do you think an animal can be dropped from safely onto a friggin' trampoline?

A dog that size? I'd say 5 feet at the absolute most, at least it wouldn't have to swim .

Honestly when I read it I assumed they had a dog with them and for some reason had to throw it out of the balloon to its death, and that I did not want to see .

I feel like it would have bombed which is why they didn't bother with a wide release. An adult period drama without awards prospects or absolute rave reviews is kind of a hard sell. Especially this time of year. Same thing is happening to A Hidden Life right now.

I found the movie enjoyable enough for a Sunday afternoon while watching my 15-month-old daughter, but I was disappointed to see that Felicity Jones' character was completely made up -- i.e., there were female aeronauts, but none named Amelia Wren, and Glaisher was
[Show spoiler]saved by someone who climbed up to the top of the balloon
during his historic flight, but that person was Henry Coxwell.

To be clear, I'm disappointed that my quest to learn more about "Amelia Wren" ended as soon as it began, not that Jones was cast in that role (she's by far the best part of the movie).

I watched this on Prime over the weekend and liked it.
I could see where seeing this on a bigger screen would be more enjoyable.

From the moment she tosses the dog out we should never leave that balloon. 3/5 on the strength of the visuals and the physicality of Jones's performance otherwise.
I think the goal here was to draw the view in and keep the attention.

Drawing out the backstory before the flight would have either been time consuming or felt rushed. Making the movie strickly "in the basket" ala Lifeboat would have been fairly difficult with two single characters that have little back story/connection and only a limited set of perills which will be narrow in scope based on the type of event and maintaining some simblance of reality.

I would have sat through a pre baloon build up, but the average audience would not, and frankly I tend to think the dramatic tenion worked out better in the way it was presented than playing out a 15-20 min climax of issues and resolution.

I bet it would've looked wonderful in any premium format (the cinematography is so gorgeous) but since this was mainly targeted to Amazon it's not playing anywhere. Besides, now with Stars Wars taking all premium formats there was just no chance for this.

A satisfactory viewing for those who enjoy stories of advancements in science via riskier endeavors.

I enjoyed this on Amazon Prime Video. Great visuals. Did not realize they were IMAX size formatting changes until reading about it afterwards. Overall, a quick distraction of entertaining entertainment.

I gave it a 4 on the poll. I did not care that there was no actual Amelia in real life... to me it said 'inspired by true events' and not 'this is what actually happened'.

Is Aeronauts available on any streaming service in Dolby Atmos like it was in the theaters?

Because I read the Atmos track one of the major draws to watch this movie...

https://variety.com/2019/artisans/ne...ng-1203410700/

Quote:
“I thought it would be cool to do the same with sound,” Walpole explains. “We mix on 7:1 on the ground and open to Atmos when the balloon gets into the air. Tom was instantly on board with that, and Atmos became such a great tool for us. “ He adds, “We could take the four key components and put the balloon above the viewer’s head. The basket goes to the front, and it just gives this illusion of first-person sense for the viewer.”

As the balloon ascends and descends, that sound needed to be relayed to the viewer. Walpole says that was the toughest aspect to create since the balloon was a gas one and not hot air.

For him to tell the story, Walpole constructed the sound of air from “multiple layers of wind. It was constantly changing throughout the film.” He says, “For any given scene, there were four or five different winds being treated as objects in the Dolby Atmos world. They also played very quietly so as a viewer, you don’t latch into the cue, but you have a sense of continuous movement around you.”

I've seen this movie twice since it came out. Really hope Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne continue to make more movies together.
