Lucas doesn't owe the fans anything, but he didn't work on these films alone and in my opinion not releasing the original films is very disrespectful to the people who worked hard on them back then.

Well at least we also have the Project 4k going on. I've been very pleased with the releases already completed. I donated $500 toward to 4K80 project so I put my $ where my mouth is. Also means I'll probably end up buying this set as well. I don't mind that as much since the last set I bought was an old VHS release

I don't care for these huge boxed sets and won't be buying this one. They take up too much space. I currently own the blu-ray trilogy sets of the first 6 films and would like to see them re-released in 4K the same way as individual three-film sets. I also currently own Force Awakens and Last Jedi as standalone and want to see Episodes 7-9 released in 4K as a separate trilogy set the same way this coming April(?). I would buy that to complete the saga as three separate trilogy sets. I have Solo in 4K and will buy the individual 4K of Rogue One to upgrade from Blu if and when released. The standard sized blu-ray cases (whether as standalone or in a trilogy set) work best and fit in my enclosed shelved cabinets just fine.

I think Im with you on this one. Im concerned about the PQ and whatever digital "mucking" they do to these transfers. But, crappy packaging doesnt work for me either. I suppose you could just buy cases and print out cover art but thats a pain. I always thought that Star Wars in 4K wouild be a Day1, no brainer purchase but that might not be the case anymore.

Judging by Disney's treatment of their recent Marvel catalog UHDs, this will probably be DNR city on the OT.

This is not only reported by me, but by others as well.

I don’t know how it compares to prior blu-ray releases; But by UHD standards, they do not look great.

Average is pretty much the best these films’ masters look like on UHD for Disney+
I can confirm about edge enhancements. That is noticeable sharpening in some scenes. But I’m not bothered by that like I am with the awful smearing on AOTC.

Here’s a wake-up call for people on this forum:

The UOT group is a molecule in a drop of water in an Olympic-size swimming pool on a cruise ship in the ocean that is the Star Wars audience. They didn’t buy LucasFilm to make the UOT to the 500 people who refuse to watch the modified versions. They bought it to make billions of dollars at the box office and billions more on merchandising. They will make 1000x more selling Baby Yoda dolls than they would selling the UOT.

I've been wondering, why aren't the 35 mm fan-scans in HDR? Is it because those theater reels have very limited color spaces or because it's too complicated for amateurs?

They've tried to work on it but it's just too difficult.

Team Negative 1 have stated they don't have the equipment or expertise to do HDR properly. Maybe when 4k80 is done they'll revisit it since they have the uncompressed files archived but that probably won't be for couple years.

This doesn't make any sense considering the reaction to TLJ had nothing to do with different directors being chosen, and TLJ itself was the first in the trilogy to use a different director.

It's also incredibly rude and lame-brained to assume that people don't like a demonstrably bad movie because they're "one-dimensional".

I personally was incredibly open-minded to what could happen in this new trilogy and even loved and still love a lot of the decisions regarding Luke, Rey & Kylo in that movie. I really tried to like it. Unfortunately, it's just a bad movie for many reasons.

Valid according to whom? It’s subjective and a lot of people find the prequels quite enjoyable. Sure they got issues but what movie series doesn’t? At least they feel cohesive and if they were assembled from the same parts per se. I’m OK with the sequel trilogy overall but it’s so obvious that they don’t gel right and it really detracts from their rating for me. The prequels are better than the sequels and tell a much more concise story. It isn’t even close.

Force awakens set things up albeit safely. Last Jedi came in and went all goofy even though it’s an OK movie, maybe. Then, Rise had no choice but to throw band aids on the various wounds and nurse the trilogy back to health. I actually liked Rise and feel it was the best they could do under the circumstances.

Original Trilogy>>> Prequels>>> Sequels.

The writing, the pacing and the direction.

The writing is terrible for several reasons: It not only gives a ridiculous amount of screentime towards b-plots but at least one of them actively contradicts its own moral (Poe/Holdo). It doesn't have a consistent tone and wildly oscillates between being a serious drama to a wacky and family-fun adventure comedy. For one character (Finn), it just completely scraps his established character and forces him to literally just repeat his arc from the previous movie. Many plot beats are essentially a repeat of V the way VII repeats IV. Any opportunity for compelling narratives that arise from the couple of legitimately interesting "subversive" story decisions is immediately taken off the table (Snoke dies, but nothing really changes whatsoever in Kylo or Rey because of it).

The pacing is a huge issue too - it's completely sluggish and lacks energy for most of the movie, which is fine if it's using that time to adequately develop the characters, but it doesn't.

The direction is atrocious. Things that should be majestic and impactful, like Leia using the Force for the first time onscreen, induce laughter. The fight scenes have no dramatic tension whatsoever and enemies are easily-defeated (Finn yelling "hey." to Phasma before hitting her and she randomly falls through the floor lol).

All of this is off the top of my head.

Now, you may be able to see past all this, and there are certainly elements of the movie I like. And more power to you if you can enjoy it with relatively few reservations.

One thing I've noticed, though, is that TLJ defenders generally like to hurl insults rather than defend the movie on its merits. Curious. I think in light of all these issues you're painting with a hugely broad brush to say that critics of the movie are "one-dimensional".
