I wonder how many people did last minute disc purchases for Christmas. I know I was one of them (Mostly for myself though).

Something is definitely off. The overall picture is not good though. Everyone must have been busy watching the Witcher.

Likely the revenue numbers, as then the YoY percentages would make sense (with Blu-ray being down 31.5% and DVD 17.9%).

Edit: It is the revenue numbers, as the unit sales add up that way (Blu-ray 2.87 million units sold * $19.02 ave. unit cost).

So just one more week of reporting and then we have the yearly results, correct?

Yes I emailed them a few days ago, but they probably would have fixed it anyway by now since it's so obvious.

Last week's numbers are in, so the 2019 totals are (in millions):

OD: $3393.39 -17.6% YoY (last year YoY was -12.9%)

DVD: $1792.13 -20.4% YoY (last year was -20.7%)

Blu-ray $1601.28 -14.1% YoY (last year was -1.2%)

Blu-ray share vs. DVD: 47.2% (last year was 45.3%)

Box office power: -9.7% (last year was +15.2%)

The DEG Report should be out any day now so we'll get an idea of how it compares with the weekly pie chart totals (they almost always line up very well), and what the UHD share is.

One thing to note: Blu-ray did much worse this year, but so did the box office power of the movies that were released on disc. Blu-ray (and UHD) are highly dependent on the quality of new theatrical releases and it showed. Last year the box office was up 15 percent and this year down 10 percent. DVD was not really affected as it doesn't depend on the top sellers for sales very much as some much is released on the format.

It's insane that the DVD market is still bigger than the Blu ray market in 2019.

Yeah, on the surface it seems absurd, but DVD still releases about 4 times the content, so the long tail keeps it strong and consistent (consistent week to week, although declining 20% per year, the decline itself is consistent as well).

Blu-ray only gained 2% in market share from last year. I though this year it would overtake DVD, at that rate it still might be below 50% after this year (and that's which UHD included).

You taught me this many years ago, still seems lost on the press and experts to this day.

Is the fact of the box office being down almost 10% solely related to the quality of movies, or are people simply choosing other entertainment options?

There has always been a strong correlation between box office power and Blu-ray revenue. "Quality" was maybe a poor word choice because that's subjective for the most part. "Popular" would be a better word.

Sure, people are obviously choosing other entertainment options, otherwise disc sales wouldn't be declining as they are.
