Charlie Chaplin, and many other older films, were shot in 16-18 fps. Then everything went downhill once filmmakers started increasing the frame rate to 24fps. 24fps looks too fake, and doesn't look like film at all. It's too high a frame rate for cinema.

I really can't stress just how much this is not true. To build on something StringVelveeta said before, as a gamer when I first switched to PC gaming with adaptive sync and higher framerates it was unlike anything I'd ever played and I loved it. I didn't have to get used to it or adjust in order to realize it was pleasing to me. Of course it's a very different medium and it's hard to compare the two, but even with film I didn't have to get used to HDR, 3D, surround sound, various aspect ratios, etc to realize if I liked them or not. So I don't need to watch 20 movies in HFR to realize that I really can't stomach the way it looks for a feature film. It's an incessant assault on my suspension of disbelief and to me it just makes everything look kitschy and half-baked.

It's honestly baffling to me why anyone would like it, but I accept that they do. Like with anything, we all have different tastes. But I'd rather not see folks just shrug off those who don't like HFR just because they "aren't used to it". It goes much deeper than that.

I think it looks awesome and it's nice to have it as an alternative visual treat for a 3D movie.

I watched the first 20 minutes last night and it just looks.......off. The HFR, the cinematography. It felt like I was watching some sort of cheap demo reel at Best Buy in the Magnolia area of the store.

I'll definitely check out the rest of the film(it was late, so I could only sample a bit of it), but put me in the camp that prefers 24 frames per second.

These people who don't like HFR literally only because they aren't used to it sure are sensitive today.

I quite clearly did not shrug off anything. I was aiming for nuance, which is of course a big no-no on the Interwebs. My very next sentence was:

But it's also the case that the reason 24fps became the accepted standard is because that's what was found to be most pleasurable.
You yourself are saying you agree with this bolded part!

I don't like HFR and not because I'm "not used to it", but because I think it just plain looks like shit. There's nothing "sensitive" about not wanting some random poster to speak for me let alone he or she assuming they know why I dislike the format.

Many people don't like 3D. Do you think it's because they're "not used to it", or maybe, just maayyybbeee it's a matter of one's own preference and taste

What makes 24fps better than 18fps or 27fps?

Will Smith's had a pretty wild career from rapper to tv star to supporting movie actor to moviestar and rapper (again) to elevated moviestar to hit and miss leading man to YouTuber, etc.

It seemed like he was a relevant 'superstar' for most of my life and then after around the time of I Am Legend he seemed to have lost his momentum with projects like Seven Pounds and After Earth. For ages his movies were events where families would basically say, 'let's go see the new Will Smith movie.' Adam Sandler also had that kind of staying power for a while during the same time frame. He's been doing a lot of sequels or rebooted franchises over the last decade or so with the odd good role, such as with Concussion. Also thought Focus was fun, if a bit forgettable. It's definitely weird to see him on YouTube in a sea of d and z-listers.

I think these concepts are interrelated, if not nearly one and the same. The reason a person might not have a taste/preference for a particular food is because he/she is not used to it. But people who grew up eating that food are used to the taste and therefore have no problem with it.

Do our personal preferences and predilections come down to matters of personal taste? Yes, but what determines them? I'd argue that familiarity plays a big role.

This leads to the whole nature vs. nuture debate of psychological development, and, thus, I've gone completely off topic, so I will stop here.

Apologies to anyone I offended. Twas not my intention!!!

I never said it did. My position is not to argue about which is better. There is no definitive answer to weather one frame rate is superior, be it 15, 24 or 120. It is a matter of taste and perspective, not a pissing contest about being 'right' about something. I have my reasons for not liking HFR, as you have your reasons for liking it.

When you assume you know "why" people feel a certain way about something and imply that everyone else in the thread agrees with you, then yes, I will laugh at you as I did a few posts ago.

Again, do you feel that the countless people who dislike 3D do so because they "literally aren't used to it"?

So you randomly decided that you prefer 24fps over anything else even before you ever watched a single film, and it has absolutely nothing do to with the fact that you just happened to watch every single movie ever in 24fps?
