And that would be Taxi Driver. The film Phillips used half of ideas from for the Joker.

Almost everybody's favorite movies are an amalgamation of that director's influences and faves, plied where applicable. From Indiana Jones to Django Unchained.

I liked the part where he turned directly into the camera to explain the movies morals because I (a total dumba**) could not possibly put together what the movie was trying to say without it being very clearly laid out for me.

I read a lot of comments about Joker around, and I think the film falls victim to a sort of "revered over-hype" syndrome. Basically, the tug and pull between the initial idiotic "woke backlash" hysteria, who still hate the film and hate that it was so successful and "why are we the only smart people with taste who can see how terrible the film is" kind of mentality, versus a few people who treat the film as a bit too "godlike perfect," probably overcompensating to the backlash.

When really, it seems the general consensus is, it's a good movie, with great performances. Yes, we all know it's like King of Comedy and Taxi Driver. And Raiders of the Lost Ark is like old b-movie serials, and Star Wars is like The Hidden Fortress meets Flash Gordan. It's fine. Does it deserve Best Picture? I'd say no, but I definitely thought it was a good movie.

Cookie cutter comic book movies are so common....but along came Joker and it gets attacked for actually being different. Great acting, great story, great directing, no cgi, no goofed up continuity, no ridiculous premise.....guess some people aren't used to it
