I think that might be the problem though, the movie was scanned at 6K but the 3D was finished out to 2K and as that was the primary focus for the remaster then the 2D may have been output at that rez as well.

Still, an HDR grade is going to be its own thing anyway so I'm not crying into my cereal at the thought of them starting over. I mean, they could take the Scott-approved master as a guide and then tease out some more range in the appropriate areas. Get DP Jeff Kimball in to approve it (as Paramount would prefer to have the talent involved in regrading for HDR e.g. https://www.engadget.com/2018/07/18/...le-4k-and-hdr/), job done.

They would have to if they want a native master.
I just want it to be as Tony wanted it to look

From what I can tell, the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track on the standard and 3D Blu-rays is the original audio mix. I really hope that’s ported over if it is indeed the original audio mix. I’m totally fine with crazy Atmos remixes as long as the original audio mixes of catalog titles is carried over... or the Atmos remix is done by the same team with the exact same materials, just with different separation (like the Matrix trilogy).

I doubt it. Most likely it'll have a Dolby Atmos remix, and it will a Dolby 7.1 downconvert.

Paramount has not paid for Dolby Atmos remasters on 4K catalog titles. They’ve just been including the same audio as their Blu-ray counterpart.

Here's to hoping we get the original audio included in the package. I've never seen Top Gun (I know, I know), so this will be a great way to watch it, I hope!

The opening credits sequence on the flight deck is one big optical and will look like hot shit in 4K HDR, it wouldn't surprise me if it's 'grain managed' quite a bit, though I wonder if Paramount will redo the titles digitally like they did on Beverly Hills Cop?

Heck, the titles were already redone at the very beginning (against black) on the 3D version. Man, as tempting as a 4K release is, I can’t imagine enjoying the film any more than I do in that 3D presentation, warts and all. I’ve watched it countless times, and it’s always super entertaining.

Aye, but I'm saying they might redo the ones imposed over the live action as well, only I don't see the point because it's not like they're rescuing the camera negative for those scenes. They're taking the 'clean' dupe - which still looks like ass - and then putting the new titles over the top. Did the same thing with the location titles in SPR too.

As long as the opening titles no longer have frozen grain fields that break apart when the jets move into the shot I will be a happy boy
