Big fan of Mizoguchi. I think I have everything of his Criterion has released, including the Eclipse set. I'm always hopeful they put out more golden era Japanese stuff, particularly more Kinoshita. A new edition of Floating Weeds and Early Summer would be great too.

Film Forum's new repertory schedule has been posted. Lots of excellent films in it as usual. The most notable bit as far as Criterion goes are the screenings of Fellini's Nights of Cabiria from a 4K restoration, and Jean Renoir's Toni.

I don't know much about the film and I haven't seen it, but I did read that a B&W version has been prepared by the director and is being released at the end of this month in very limited theatrical showings in L.A. and NYC. I guess this might make a "deluxe" package with both the colour and B&W versions a possibility.

Parasite is one of the most talked-about, effusively reviewed, highest-grossing and awarded non-English films of the decade. I can't imagine it lingering forever on a barebones Blu-ray. It's the perfect candidate for the boutique label treatment.

I just watched my first Cassavetes film last night A Woman Under the Influence and I absolutely loved it. Couldn't take my eyes off of Gena Rowlands. Unfortunately it was the DVD from Netflix mail. I checked the other choices and they are all DVD versions, guess they're getting away from older Blurays and concentrating on Digital.. Anyways, I'm contemplating renting the others through Vudu or is it worth just grabbing the Five Films Collection on blu as blind buys? Amazon has it at $75.
How are the other 4 films rewatchability, and what are your personal rankings? Thanks for the advice. Haven't posted in here in a long time. |

The film itself is now 64 years old. The 2011 Criterion blu-ray release is the best the film has ever looked. Even if it were to receive a 4K transfer, which is doubtful, I can't imagine a significant improvement from where it is now.

Yeah, The Killing is in my top-5 CC discs. Not only does it look great, and it's a top-tier noir, but it also contains a restored version of Killer's Kiss. I had only read about that film before getting this disc and it makes it a great double-feature, not to mention the other extras.
Now if you're a fan of Sterling Hayden you should also grab Asphalt Jungle; also a great noir but it has the documentary film "Pharos of Chaos" about Hayden. It's absolutely engrossing and I've revisited it many times, a really intimate and somewhat uncomfortable look into his real life. Then go watch the film "The Long Goodbye" (Kino) and it gives you a completely different perspective on Hayden in that film. I'm not obsessed. |

By no means are things "spelled out," in Parasite, but I'd recommend Burning to anyone who enjoys films that are a little more open for interpretation. It's streaming on Netflix right now. |

With Army of Shadows coming back from Criterion, I think this exchange with the Kino Insider from last year pretty much confirms that Le Cercle Rouge will also be coming from Criterion eventually too.
