Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga 4K UHD (1977-2019)

I’m still perplexed on the Extra’s. If they’re indeed NINE discs of bonuses one disc for each film, then I expect the Originals to get hours worth dedicated to each film.

If not, it’s easier for them to simply port over the three discs from the 2011 set and of course the three bonus discs for each of the sequel trilogy movies.

Actually, Episodes I and II look terrible on Bluray/streaming because of DNR,
if that wasn't applied they would look way better.
Thankfully I have the HDTV version of Episode II, and I'm waiting for the 4K99 version of Episode I.

There's heavy DNR on the AOTC BD? If there is it is certainly light compared to Disney+.

Correct - the BDs have some but it isnt that bad. I just hope they do these right.... thats all I gotta say.

Episode I needs a new transfer from the 2K digital files without the DNR scrubbing, and Episode II could stand to lose the teal regrading. All three films are limited by their source, of course, I'm under no illusions about that. But the Disney+ versions are still lacking on those two (III has no issues, as far as I can tell).

That was my point, they're not definitive at all. Disney just took the masters that had already been done for I-VI and added an HDR coat of paint. The OT remasters are superior to the old Blu-Ray transfers, but not quite up to the level you'd want for Star Wars. I'm assuming of course that the UHD set is the same masters, but I think that's a pretty safe guess.

HDR is not like a coat of paint and Disney didn't add anything that wasn't already in the negatives. They just included more of what is already there, essentially restoring the dynamic range that was subtracted from the SDR Blu-ray transfers.

But I thought HDR was crayons?

I just meant they may have handled the grading for the UHD transfers, as I'm not sure if Lucas finished them ahead of time or just had raw 4K scans. They may have been already finished, actually, since it's speculated the DNR (mild as it is) may have been because they were being prepped for a 3D conversion originally.

I can't imagine much for the OT or PT is going to be "new", aside from the limited stuff that was supposedly held back from the initial Blu-ray release (more deleted scenes, etc).

I'd love to be surprised...but I am not expecting to see anything we haven't already seen one way or another. I am presuming some Celebration panels ("Date with a Princess", etc.) might make it in, or other stuff that has been available elsewhere, to pad it out.

My secret hope is that when they had everyone at Pinewood to do TFA that they wrangled Hamill, Ford, and Fisher together to do something like a full-length commentary on the originals, but as there wasn't even a rumor of that happening, I think I'm going to be SOL on that one.

Who says what it should or shouldn't have hit, aside from the people actually doing the grading? Low brightness HDR doesn't equal "fake HDR", it's an aesthetic choice that's been made and if the folks crying foul just said "I don't like dim HDR, I want everything to pop" then I'd have a lot more respect for them than when they try to justify their personal preferences behind a bunch of technobollocks and gatekeeping bullshit like how it looks worse on supermarket special HDR TVs, like they're the 'true voice' of HDR or something.

I literally laughed out loud when Vincent said of The Mandalorian that doing "proper" i.e. eyebrow-roastingly bright HDR is reliant on how much money is being spent on it, him being utterly oblivious that The Mandalorian is one of THE most expensive TV shows ever made, reportedly costing $15 million per episode (!) and that it's graded by one of the premier post houses in the business (CO3).

One of their finishing artists literally said that Mando wasn't graded to be ultra bright but apparently that's not enough evidence for some, them coming up with conspiracy theories that these guys would lose their jobs if they didn't stick to the Disnee PR line, like they're spotty goobers working for peanuts out of a sweatshop in Van Nuys. Just.....no.

The outtakes unveiled at the 40th anniversary celebrations may be bonus material for this set, perhaps, also the old Saga documentary?

I mean, Im not really concerned with the mandalorian, it is what is. But in regards to the movies, if you grade the ST one way, and then release the other movies with completely different brightness ranges, that seems a bit out of place, no?

It almost seems like a waste of Dolby Vision, which who knows if it will be on disc anyhow. Im not saying the movies have to hit 10k nits, but I would expect the grading to be more in line with the movies that were already released in HDR.
