I actually thought Doctor Sleep demonstrated that you don't have to de-age actors.

Definitely agree. It made a very good case for recasting. I’d MUCH rather have this than some kind of face-swapped Shelly Duvall. Jack’s casting was terrible though, I will agree with that view.

Recasting Jack was going to be a near impossible task to nail regardless of who you pick. That being said, I think they did a fine job with Henry Thomas, he might not have the voice or similar facial resemblance (the hair do was absolutely perfect though) but he did good, some moments he really felt like Jack Tolerance. THAT bar scene is probably my favorite one in the movie, it made me tear up!

I didn't even know it was Elliott til a day or two after I saw the movie. And it wasn't distracting the second time around either.

But I'll say I remain more impressed with what the actress playing Wendy was able to do. There's a scene early on (no spoilers) when Wendy runs outside to find Danny sitting on a park bench. The way she runs, the way she yells out his name, just an absolute match for Duvall.

I know exactly the scene you're referring to and yup, she really nailed the Duvall impression.

I really enjoyed this more than I thought I would and feel that it is an excellent companion piece to THE SHINING. My first viewing was the DC but I'm thinking of giving the TC a spin this weekend as long as I can confirm that nothing from the Overlook is truncated. It was a pure joy revisiting the hotel and I wouldn't want any less of it.
Not sure if I'm being nitpicky, but am I the only one that thinks this would have been better if they found a way to better match the look of the first film? I know that it would have been cost prohibitive to shoot on film. I just wished they had made an attempt to match the film stock of the original with some type of filter. I've seen this done with improving results on more recent films.

Man I can't wait to check out and get this DC on blu ray! I thought Doctor Sleep was the best film of 2019 and one of my top 10 films of the last 20 years. I even loved it more than The Shining which is one of my top 10 horror films and favorite Kubrick film.

The additions included minor character development moments, and a couple unnecessary plot points. Seeing the film without these did not affect my original viewing experience in the slightest. To me, the theatrical cut trimmed the fat, which is what a theatrical cut should do. If people want to let the film breathe and want to spend 3 hours watching it as opposed to 2.5 then that's their call, but I don't think it will change most people's opinion of the film.
Agreed. I prefer the theatrical cut's pace as well.

I haven't seen the director's cut yet (because WB hates the Brits), but I thought the pacing of the theatrical cut was perfect. I can't really imagine it being significantly better.

Either way, I'm itching to rewatch the film.

The bathroom scene with Danny and Jack is cut, and the conversation at the bar is slightly shorter. Otherwise the ending mostly plays out the same. (The theme of Danny's eyes reminding his mother of Jack is dropped in the TC as well, which tweaks the focus of the ending a little bit).

I was only able to watch the first hour of the director's cut before having to run errands. But it's already a much more fulfilling and smoothly paced movie with the added footage. The 8 year jump doesn't feel as rushed because of this.

WHV Japan has a great red version of the cover for the Japanese UHD, which of course also comes in a slipbox:

[Show spoiler]

Amazon exclusive:

EDIT: Apparently, WB/Roadshow are using this variant for the Australian release, but that seems to drop the theatrical Blu-ray:

Thanks for the info... so I guess I'll never watch the theatrical cut of this, just like I've never seen the European cut of THE SHINING..

I tend not to prefer extended/director's cuts, but in this case the DC is superior. I don't know how essential any of the new material is, but the flow and pacing of the movie (especially early on, which was very choppy in the theatrical cut) is drastically improved. For those who haven't seen the movie yet, I'd just default to the DC. I imagine this will become the definitive version of the movie, a la Kingdom of Heaven and BvS. Makes it more annoying that WB didn't give it a UHD.
DC is superior, without a doubt. It's damn near perfect, and it's on my top 20 list. The TC is really good as well.

The chapter titles are a nice touch.

So is this a remake of the shining or a sequel? I picked up a used copy of the shining on bluray but have not had a chance to watch it yet.

I've never done a disc to digital pre-order from Vudu before but seriously considering this one. What is the average delivery date for the disc after release when using this process?
