It's probably time for a complete overhaul, and it makes sense that a redesign would be happening soon. iPhone has been out for nearly three years now -- in basically the same package.

It'll be interesting to see how they change it up.

Yeah, I keep hearing how the iPhone does not have things a dumb phone does and blah blah blah, 2 years and yadda yadda yadda. Apple is new to the phone market (was anyways). The next iPhone offering will be the true teller of whether or not Apple has been listening and gets it. If they fail with the new phone, they will sink. Apple or not.

I do hope it's something better. Faster, snappier, better camera, etc etc.

They said "this summer". So probably round June when the supposed "new phone" comes out.

Let's not forget some more basic stuff like video capture, legit voice-dialing, and better (meaning ANY) support for flash. I'm sure you had those in mind, but I figured I'd throw those in there. How the iPhone doesn't support flash is beyond me, considering that Adobe and Apple go hand-in-hand.

But yeah, I agree with you: they've had their time in the market to make notes on how to improve their mobile phone product. I'm sure they'll come out with a dynamite phone, having a few years of experience now.

Flash would be nice, but I am not sure I want to deal with that on the phone honestly. Ugh. Voice dialing I guess would be nice, never used it. Tried it several times on my dumb phones and it was nothing to right home about. Understand when I say that - it's not a justification for it not to be there. I am just saying.

Yes, their next phone better be vastly improved or they are going to have a crap storm.

I like voice dialing for when I'm walking out and about and need to make a call, but don't feel like searching through my directory to find the person I want to call. Granted, the phonebook is super-easy to use, and I'm not complaining, I'm just saying that it is a super-basic feature and should be on phones "just because" if you know what I mean. Ninety-nine percent of my phone calls are done from my car, and I use my car's Bluetooth for that anyway.

I definitely want flash -- no way around that. There are tons of sites that don't load properly when there's no flash, and I don't like that. Many sites are so flash-heavy that if there's no flash, then you can't even use the site. That's a two-part problem: one part bad design by the web designer, and one part deal by Apple to not be able to interpret it.

Then we could talk about sharing. iPhone should be able to be plugged into a computer via USB and have its media library shared over a network, just as iPods can. I've never gotten why they don't do that for the iPhone.

Then there's the syncing and data transfer issues. iPhone syncs OK enough as far as the phonebook and contact information, but it could be A LOT better. Moving images taken with the iPhone to your computer should be a lot easier, too.

Lots of room for improvement, Apple!

i don't think anyone is in the position to say one is or isn't coming this year

but with the amount of phones coming out this year, it'd be in apples best interest to have a new one

Awesome new features, landscape SMS FINALLY, never used MMS much when I had other phones, but I like the games that they demoed as well, may have to get them when they are released.

Apparantly the Dev Team http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ says that it is jailbreakable already, good news for me I can keep my current theme, which just makes it soo much better now can it be summer already? lol

I dont think Apple can do much in a year to improve by much, all it will be is a small update like the 2G to 3G from last year.

At the very minimum, it will be the current phone with 32GB (which has been available on the Touch for what? 6 months)?

A better camera wouldn't hurt. Otherwise, I wouldn't expect anything else other than perhaps some more colors, which fits Apples' typical MO with the ipods.

Exactly, nothing worth upgrading just yet. Even with taking a year off with a new major phone, Apple will still have the best phone. I think the next major phone update needs a video camera with iChat, and possibly video conferencing

well there's not really anything any of the major players can add to their phones. small updates are what happens. and the small updates won't do much for you 3g people, but for the 2g people who are able to upgrade their phones this year, a small updated 3g will rule.

i'd say thinner, bigger capacity are obvious. better camera is likely. not really sure what else is missing. i think the cpu will stay the same, but maybe they'll unlock a little bit more of it

oh..and they don't even have the best phone now, let alone after everyone releases a new phone but thats just me lol

I have a Palm Treo and was actually looking to upgrade my phone, but Sprint's selection sucks majorly, unfortunately (or fortunately), I get a GREAT deal with Sprint: 500 daytime minutes (which I never use anyways), nights and weekends free and nights starting at 7, unlimited text, unlimited internet, free Sprint to Sprint, all for about 30 bucks a month including tax.

So since I'm pretty sure no other carrier will give me that deal, I'm stuck with Sprint and the Treo 700p.

The gap between the two generations is starting to widen now, though. It might be time to suck it up and buy one soon.
The 3g has significant hardware improvements ala stereo bluetooth capability that the 2g will not have, mms capability also will not be available to the 2g and the biggest GPS. 3G is much better than the 2G as time will show.

Apple software continues to outshine and outdo the competition. iPhone is like BASF, we didn't invent the cell phone we just make it better.

The iPhone 3.0 software release day this summer may be a sad one for the little iPhone Pirate. Will we still need jailbreaking? As Rene has already pointed out, yes you will be able to jailbreak iPhone 3.0 but just how many of you will be abandoning this process all together? We’ve given you our Top 5 Jailbreak Apps and 5 More Jailbreak Apps. Now Apple has seemed to satisfy most, if not all of your iPhone needs with the 3.0 software, it may be bit premature to cast jailbreaking into the darkness just yet. Some of the reasons being:
No themes
Categories and folders
Tethering, still no sign of this coming anytime soon from AT&T.
Lack of options for things such as ringers and tones.
On screen notifications
Video recording
Yes, we all know that things may change from now and the time 3.0 is released but the above list has a bleak outlook in terms of Apple tossing them into the mix anytime soon. How many of you will still be jailbreaking when iPhone 3.0 drops?

I guess it depends on what your definition of "significant" is, but yeah we are starting to see the differences, especially now with this new update. Stereo Bluetooth doesn't mean much to me, but I definitely get your points.

Either way, if you read one of my posts from earlier you'll see why it didn't make sense to get the 3G right away like I did when the OG dropped. There's still an issue with the 3G of not having a good battery life between charges; hopefully that gets solved.

The "time will show" part of what you wrote kind of worries me. A new generation of any product should need very little time to "convince" people that it is significantly improved over its predecessor.

Having said all that, I'm not saying the 3G isn't better. I'm just saying that if you have a first-gen like I do, you're not really gaining much -- especially when you consider that you have to buy a new phone, and incur additional charges per month for your service.

The iPhone still rules, though!
