Indeed. Which remote did you buy? The one that comes with the 9000 that is backlit? The lack of a backlit remote puts me off the 820, but only a fool would buy a 9000 for that reason!

though I do wish that the video processing would be updated with more bit depth because the mild banding that's introduced via the Optimiser is a bit of a niggle. That can't be done with firmware though, it needs the next generation of HCX processing and as we're four years in it's due an upgrade.
Agreed. I'm close to buying an 820 but just as frustrated as you. I know that if I did buy one, the next day someone would announce the new player than you and I are both waiting for!

I could definitely see a UB850 (or whatever they'd call it) with the newer processor next year. And maybe a betterer remote?

Time will tell.

Erm, I've already waited for the whole of 2019 for the UB850 (or whatever they'd call it). I can't really wait for the whole of 2020, too. I'm using a Samsung K8500, for crying out loud!

Hey, I own a UB820, precisely because I wanted a better player now. Just saying I wouldn't be surprised to see Panasonic bring out the next generation of higher-end players next year, since they aren't doing it this year.

But there's no guarantee they will, so I say just get one of the current players and be happy for now. The UB850 (or whatever they'd call it) we can worry about if/when it's released.

Would be nice if Panasonic can make a HDR player for $500 without a plastic enclosure, a better remote, ...all that Oppo jazz.

Just meet with Panasonic's top engineers at CES and they have no plans on any successor BD player for 2020.

I am still working with them on several firmware upgrades to enhance the operation and performance and fix a couple items.

The 9000, the last great UHD player. I’m gonna go give mine a hug.

I find a little tequila greases those engineering wheels and gets the firmware juices flowing.😉

Yes, ^ those are the executive engineers! I also met with a few others that were dressed somewhat differently.

Robert, on your sign outside your store, add HDR10+ after Electronics, inside the shield.
...And DV before Value, inside that other shield.

It’s 2020, So Where is Rec2020?

A new decade is upon us. It is the year of the Rat. It’s a presidential election year in the US. This decade self-driving cars promise to become ubiquitous. In a mere 7 months the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics will commence. Yet, we won’t be watching any of it in Rec2020 color gamut.

There has been a lot of hype around Rec2020 in the past five years, and I always questioned if it was achievable or necessary. The standards that govern Rec2020 cover a whole host of specifications, but as a QD and color gamut guru, I’m focused on Rec2020 color gamut for now.

The Rec2020 gamut was defined such that a display that met this specification would be able to reproduce nearly all the colors found in nature (as measured by Pointer in 1980). As you can see in the figure below, this would also include a significant amount of colors that are NOT found in nature. It’s worth noting that current color gamut specifications such as sRGB, 709, even DCI-P3 do not come close to encompassing Pointer’s gamut.

Is this for both players, ie the 820 too?
Are they reluctant to implement your ideas?

Oh, but doing that would surely mislead people with the implication that they were equivalent formats

Most of the fixes and enhancements are for the UB820 and UB9000, some relate only the the UB9000. Most of the delay is due to several factors. From what I've been told here's a few of the delays.
  • Some of the enhancements require more memory or a new SoC so they are being reserved for the next generation, which is scheduled for 2021 or possibly even later.
  • Other issues are getting my suggestions past all of the departments that have to approve the changes, engineering, product development, executive management and even the legal department
  • Some of the items on my list are being considered, but the engineering time and internal testing is a very long process
