The article that you linked to puts it plainly enough:

"New data from Parks Associates says most American households still consume the majority (topping 50%) of home entertainment video through broadcast television."

and:

"survey respondents said they spend nearly 20 hours per week on average watching linear TV, compared to nearly four hours on a mobile phone."

Ugh. I can't stand to watch four minutes of video on my phone, but it is good to see that viewing on a TV trounces phone viewing by 5:1.

Paying monthly fees for access to content has been the norm for many decades. Cable TV began in 1948 after all. Whether people use cable TV, satellite TV, or subscription streaming all of it means paying a recurring fee for access to content that they do not own; the same now as it has ever been.

Mobile viewing time will increase when mobile only services come to the fore. Quibi for example.

I knew you were going to bring this up as soon as I referenced phones. As certain as the sun rising in the east.

I don't believe that Qbert, er, Quibi, will have any impact on mobile viewing time. People can already watch a huge selection of content on their phone and Qtip's, uh, Quibi's, offerings are not going to change the amount of time people spend watching content. Available free time for leisure viewing is a finite quantity no matter the source for the content being viewed. I just don't see people switching from their Netflix fix on their 65" TVs to watch Quasimodo, ugh, Quibi, on their 5" phone screen.

And again, Verizon's Go90 service was very similar to what Quiche, um, Quibi is trying to do and it was a colossal flop.

Qbert? That was the old Atari St/Amiga game wasn’t it?

Qbert was a Gottlieb arcade game launched in 1982 that later appeared on many home video game consoles.

He had a potty mouth, too.

It would make for a great retro 3D VR title on your PS4 with its cutting edge graphics and all.

I’m still waiting for Space Harrier! Now that would be excellent in 360% 3D VR!

Agreed, the more things change the more they stay the same.

It was good to see disc are still doing fairly well. Wish they had separated EST from SVOD and AVOD or it could be EST was such a small part that it was not worth mentioning.

Also worth noting, the chart only represents US Broadband Households.

I did hear about Quibi and it's lame. I doubt it will last, but they have big backers and are attracting big talent to direct. I think Guillermo del Toro is doing a project among others.

Meanwhile, apparently Netflix and Apple are in talks to buy MGM. More than ever, it seems like streaming is winning. We are the rearguard, defenders of the crown.

How is Netflix going to buy MGM ??? They're knee deep in debt.
That would be truly ridiculous.

I read that statement as a joint venture. Apple AND Netflix. I haven't heard anything myself, though.

Paying monthly for access to streaming is no different than paying monthly for access to cable TV except that streaming is much cheaper, often in better quality, and it is very easy to change and cancel services. Cancelling cable TV service is meant to be difficult on purpose. Streaming is no more of a trap than is cable TV; it is even less of one when you compare its cost and its ease of changing/cancelling service.

I'm not one to normally bring up the issue of storage space, but if I owned a physical copy of everything that I have ever chosen to watch I would need a warehouse and a forklift. I have no desire to revisit much of this content and owning all of it would be expensive, ridiculous, and result in my being diagnosed as a hoarder combined with the impracticality of storing this massive amount of content.

My goal has been to build a library of titles on physical media that I really like and that I want to revisit, not to be an archivist preserving everything that I have ever seen.
I too only buy what I really like. I just blind buy stuff that I'm fairly certain of that I'm going to like and didn't go to the cinema for.
If I bought everything that I just wanted to see I would need 3 jobs just to pay for it. I love movies but that's just a bit much.

Between and Apple and Netflix, it isn't hard to see which one of them could really afford the purchase.

Personally, I would rather not see any digital services provider own a movie studio's content. Apple might very well restrict the entire MGM library to their digital services and we'd never see another MGM title released on disc.

Apple buying one of the major movie studios would almost certainly be bad news for fans of physical media. Apple has no interest in selling discs.

Ah, I was not even thinking about that. You're probably right. Ok, how about Disney?! Kidding!
