The trailer gave me The Witch vibes. I'm hoping it's more in the spirit of that than something like The Turning.

When The Turning and The Grudge hit digital, I'll watch both and compare all three January movies.

Gretel and Hansel is overall decent. The cinematography, score and performances from Sophie and Alice, all top notch, but while the story is fine, some aspects of that are a bit confusing.

I just know audiences are gonna hate this, lol. Slow paced, and non-mainstream, like an A24 movie, like The Witch.

Will try to say some stuff that happens in hidden tags.

6/10 or 7/10.

Have you watched Oz Perkins other movies? Especially The Blackcoats Daughter? IMO one of the best and underappreciated horror movies of the past 5 years. It's really slow burn and filled with dread from the beginning to haunting end. Does this have a similar feel? Really excited for this movie!!!

I've heard about TBD, but I never saw it. I'll check it out soon.

While I can't make a comparison, I can say that the film is quite eerie with some dread, and as stated, very slow burn.

It's not that uncomfortable or disturbing, just there are some definite creepy, WTF imagery, lol.

[Show spoiler]- Any scene where Gretel has nightmares, is bizarre.
- I still don't get the pig snorting from these characters, lol.
- One human/creature attacked Hansel, and is hit by Gretel, and killed by a huntsman
- There's a reveal that the food on the table, are turned fresh from rotten garbage, due to the witch.
- The inevitable demise of the witch is beautifully intense.
- The most shocking reveal, is Gretel having powers from the witch, when she rubs some moisture on her hands (ending implies that she's like the witch as her hands turn black).

Cinemascore predictions: D or C-.

[Show spoiler]1. That character appears in the opening flashback. That is the one thing I couldn't fully remember or grasp on.

2. She likes them, mainly Hansel, so she gives them work to do, until they leave. Of course, later on, the reveal comes that she ate her kids (I think the girl shown in the flashback, who got her 'mist' removed, from the no-face guy, was the witch's daughter, as she had powers).

D+ at worst is likely. Ending's not Turning, nor Grudge level, but it's surprising.
