If indeed they are using the newer U.S. discs - do they have the next time trailers restored? That would tempt me to upgrade.

They have no reason to use the US disks for Season 5 on wards. They done 50i disks properly. The David Tennant specials needed replacing since they were 60i. I hope they don't decide to switch to the 24p disks for the steelbook release.

I got mine today as well. They are the US 24p disks. I have emailed a complaint they should of never used the 24p on their disks in the UK.
I don't understand their mentality of 24p on re releases and Doctor Who seems to get this a lot. The only thing the original release could of done with is DTS-HD MA upgrade from DTS-HR. |

Edit: Thinking about it, I'm still really unsure why the BBC/2 Entertain keep using different masters anyway. All the different 24Hz, 50iHz and 60iHz constantly are such a waste of resources. I get that the US release has to be something other than 50Hz, but it's ridiculous how they keep shoving the EU with all these terrible/slowed down transfers when they have the native 50Hz transfer since they always have them... Also the 4k release uses a slowed down transfer, despite the blu-ray that's included is correct. And from what I can find out, the Sherlock 4k blu-ray is in the correct speed, so lord know what they're thinking! It's so strange... Last edited by -shadow-; 02-08-2020 at 07:27 PM. |

The steelbook has 4 discs compared to 6 with the original bluray series set as well, not had a chance to see if anythings missing.

What we need is people complaining for them to fix it. Only time they did actually fix a 24p release was Doctor Who 50th anniversary and re issued a new 50i disk. |

They used the 24p 'remastered' discs for the Next Time trailers. There were people on Gallifrey Base who wrote to the DVD email line specifically asking for this. Hopefully BBC Studios realises that these 24p masters are both compromises.

Just hope they don't ask for anything on Season 6 or someone get them to ask for it in 50i at least. So because of them we got 24p all for non important next time trailers God dam it.

Aren't those trailers also available in the correct speed, why would they ever ask for the 24Hz versions?

As most fans can’t tell the difference between the episodes being in 24p or 50i, or don’t really care, BBC probably thinks they can get away with it as it’s cheaper to reuse the 24p blu-Ray master with the next time trailers made for the Series 1-7 and Complete Matt Smith Years boxsets in the US (the UK Series 1-7 set uses the 50i version). In fact, the disc layout and content for the series 5 Steelbook is identical to the Complete Matt Smith Years boxset. And as that used less discs, it was probably a matter of it being cheaper and giving fans what they were demanding (the next time trailers). Series 6 and 7 will probably be the same because it’s cheaper and because the 24p versions fix a lot of issues the 50i versions had (despite having their own problems). Basically it’s cheaper to print 4 discs than it is to print 6 and to use “one size fits all” for every region in terms of the included version of the episode. |

I'm not saying they were made with the UK in mind, but that they're using them for the UK as a cost-cutting measure; the US discs have more episodes on less discs which means less discs to manufacture and include things fans want on the releases (Next Time trailers for example). It's cheaper to use the 24p discs than create new 50i discs.
