Default Impressed with my kids setup

My daughter and her boyfriend have been working on putting together a HT, and I was at their house yesterday hooking everything up for them and I think they did quite well for themselves.

They have a PS3, Sony XBR 4 40", Sony 7000 fronts, B1000 rears, CN5000 center, and a Polk Audio PSW505, the receiver is my old Sony receiver (don't remember the model number but it isn't a HDMI receiver).

After everything was hooked up and calibrated for the room, I was quite impressed with the sound. We listened to music and a movie. What really impressed me was the sound of the front speakers and the sub, that Polk sub is really tight and accurate and of course the kids liked it because it hit hard when they were jamming out to music.

The next thing they are saving up for is a new receiver. They like the new DH800 by Sony and of course the ES line. So they are going to save their money and make a decision then. I did notice I heard my daughter saying, "Daddy I love you" a lot last night, I think that is a hint. LOL

For the money they have invested, I think it is an incredible system. They got some killer deals from the internet and mom and dad.

In case you are wondering the PS3 is connected to the TV via HDMI from monoprice of course, and optical to the receiver. So for you guys that do not have a HDMI receiver don't sweat it it still sounds good, granted you are not getting the lossless audio but everything takes time.

Now it will be fun to visit them because I think they will be spending more at their house and not mine. Not sure if that is good or not. I know mom will miss spending time with her daughter.

Once again good job to my kids.

How much? Keep in mind I'm a 'Noles fan also.

Granted they will have to buy it. I bought the PS3 for them and gave them the old receiver, rears, and center.

Good story Diver.

I started out the same way as well. Still looking to upgrade to an HDMI receiver.

And just to add, they can get loseless audio with an optical connection but it'll only be in 2 channel with the ps3 set to PCM.

They'll just need to use the receiver for some post-processing to 5.1

Very cool story hopefully all will be well when the purchase their new reciever, it is nice having all connections go to your TV via one HDMI cord! Looks like in due time they will be enjoying their setup just a "tad" bit more haha.

Hey Life,

Nice looking setup you got there., real clean.

Have you tried moving the floorspeakers out a couple inches and toe them in? This should improve the sound stage...give it a shot.

JJ, I just checked out your HT and right on about your comment on Top Gun. I see some real genius in your movie watching. LOL Top Gun is the reason I spent 10 years in the Navy. I own every version of that movie ever released, VHS, DVD and Blu. Another movie I can quote every line to is Hunt for Red October.

I feel the need, the need for Blu. HaHa

Good pop you are indeed. I watched Narnia last night with my Daughter, very nice it was. Of course lakers were playing so I kept getting up and checking the score (she kept going... DADDY!! Sit down! lol). My first setup was a ps3 5.1 with optical out and HMDI to tv, no complaints from me on that setup other than i got a good price on my upgrades.

If only my dad took an interest in audio...but alas. But congrats on the kids set up! As a "kid" myself (I'm 21), my parents think I'm nuts for the most part, but at least they don't know the kind of money I've dropped on this stuff, otherwise they may start asking me for a check for my college tuition, and there's no way in hell I can afford that!

Yea, us two are the crazy young punks who no one our age or older outside of these forums seems to understand! I mean, they all enjoy the gear, but they'll never understand our line of reasoning in dropping the bank that we do on it - they're interested in more, uhh..."secular" pursuits.

And thank the lord that I have a full scholarship, or else I could never afford this!

Half scholarship and very generous parents allow me to spend most of my money from my job/internship on this (what would college be without partying and alcohol ) or I'd be in the same boat!
