![]() 1) Joker
The bathroom scene, refrigerator scene, punching out… so much of Joker was improvised by Joaquin Phoenix. And that's how a Joker film should be made. Unpredictable chaos orchestrated by a master of their craft. The origin story nobody thought they wanted, turned out to be exactly what DC needed. 2) Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Tarantino’s most subdued film, Hollywood basks in nostalgia with a hint of dread. The film transports you while the actors intrigue and amuse you. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is an experience. 3) El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie Vince Gilligan gave us a couple of masterpieces in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Any excuse to explore this world I’ll take it. Aaron Paul gives us a Jesse Pinkman who has seen some sh*t, and the audience is finally treated to a welcome ending for the character. A wonderful tension filled character driven film. 4) Knives Out Rian Johnson?… That Rian Johnson?… Alien nipple milking Rian Johnson? Don’t ask me why or how this got made, but I’m sure glad it did! Poirot had a ginormous mustache, Daniel Craig has a questionable accent and a fun script that somehow makes for one of the best and surprising performances of the year. Ana De Armas and the rest of the cast make for one hell of a good donut hole in the theater. 5) Shazam! Truly a comic book brought to life. Shazam! has wonder, action, adventure, heart, and embraces our inner child. A fun journey to the lighter side of DC. 6) Ford v Ferrari 7) Child’s Play 8) Happy Death Day 2U 9) Avengers: Endgame 10) Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker 11) Glass 12) It Chapter Two 13) Midway 14) Spider-Man: Far From Home 15) The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part 16) Aladdin 17) Toy Story 4 18) The Irishman 19) 1917 20) Alita: Battle Angel |

My list:
Top Tier - my list of movies that I consider perfect or darn close to it. I consider the following movies my absolute favorites from 2019 that I will revisit. 1. 1917 - ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I didn't really have much interest in this movie at first, but my dad wanted to see it, so my brother and I went with him. Wow, turns out this is my number one movie for 2019. From start to finish, I loved it. It was one of those rare movies where it felt like you were there, feeling truly immersed into the war and the environment. Great acting, beautiful cinematography, excellent writing, and the last 10-15 minutes of the movie will give you goosebumps. A Masterpiece. "There is only one way this war ends. The last man standing." 2. Avengers: Endgame - ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() To see so many of my favorite superheroes at once on the big screen was movie magic. The progression of the movies and build up over the last 10+ years leading up to this one didn't disappoint. As a lifelong comic book fan (over 40 years), this is as good as it gets. I had a hard time deciding between this and Joker for my # 2 spot, but Endgame is # 2 for me. "Avengers Assemble." 3. Joker - ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This movie hit home for me in more ways than one. Not only did Joaquin Phoenix do a masterful job of portraying the clown prince of crime, he also did a terrific job of portraying a person with mental health issues. Hildur Guonadottir's score is perfect, capturing the feel of Gotham city as well as one man's descent into madness at the same time. "You get what you ******* deserve!" 4. The Lighthouse - ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I almost feel like I'm ranking this too low. This movie leaves you thinking about it long after the credits roll. I absolutely loved the way it was filmed - the aspect ratio and in black & white. Two amazing performances by William Dafoe and Robert Pattinson. I've seen this one multiple times and each time it gets better, that's how great it is. One of my absolute favorites from 2019. "Dance! Dance Winslow! Dance!" 5. The Irishman - ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Anytime you have Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Joe Pesci on screen with Martin Scorsese directing, you're watching a great movie. The Irishman is no different. I think this is a movie 10 - 20 years from now that will be considered a "classic". I loved the opening, and the opening song (In the Still of the Night) sets the stage perfectly for the next 3+ hours. I loved this movie and was disappointed it didn't get the recognition it deserved at the Academy Awards. Another one Scorsese hit out of the park. "I heard you paint houses." 6. Parasite - ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Another movie I feel like I am ranking too low, but it speaks to how many great movies there were in 2019. Parasite has many layers to it that make you appreciate how well done it's made. The Academy Award winner for Best Picture, while I have it ranked behind 5 other movies, there is no argument here. A true gem of a movie. "Jessica. Only Child. Illinois. Chicago." Second Tier - list of movies I really enjoyed, but less than my top tier. 7. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 8. The Two Popes 9. Ford v Ferrari 10. Togo 11. Marriage Story 12. Shazam! 13. John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum 14. Us Third Tier - movies I really like, but enjoyed less than my second tier 15. Jojo Rabbit 16. Toy Story 4 17. Midsommar 18. Spider-Man: Far From Home 19. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker 20. Captain Marvel 21. Paddleton 22. Glass 23. Crawl 24. Ready or Not 25. Godzilla: King of the Monsters Last edited by Agent23; 02-20-2020 at 02:44 AM. |

Note: I know my rankings will be different than many. I saw A LOT of films this year but didn't enjoy too many. This might be the weakest year for film that I can remember for me personally. There were others I'd put on the list that I saw this year, but they were released at the end of 2018 (Bumblebee, Mary Poppins Returns, Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse, etc). Some of the movies that I didn't write about, I didn't like that much - but I was honest with how I listed them after revisiting some this past week. With that said, here is my top 20 of 2019...
1.Toy Story 4 - It's emotional. It's action packed. It's funny. It's for kids. It's for adults. It's for teenagers. It's for everyone. It's a well told story with familiar characters that we all love. ![]() 2. Dumbo - I found this film to be underrated. Going into it, I don't think I read one rave review...however, I loved every bit of it. It was a different take on a classic story and wasn't just another retread of its animated counterpart. Was it good enough to be #2 on the list? For me it was. It's one of the few movies from 2019 that I will re-watch. ![]() 3. The Art of Racing in the Rain - Like Dumbo, no one raved about this movie. I have read the book and usually never enjoy a movie as much as a book, but this is a rare exception. It was funny, it was dramatic, and it hit all the spots + I could watch it with my kids. ![]() 4. The Upside - I didn't expect to like this at all as I am not a huge Kevin Hart fan, but it was much different (and better) than I thought it would be. Bryan Cranston was fantastic as always, but Kevin Hart showed that he has some acting chops outside of just stupid comedy. ![]() 5. Hobbs & Shaw - I put this at number five because it's a great popcorn, action film. Vanessa Kirby is amazing in the film and dare I say, she stole the show - which is hard to do when paired with The Rock, Jason Statham, and Idris Elba. ![]() 6. John Wick 3: Parabellum 7. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World 8. Little Women 9. Spider-Man Far From Home 10. The Farewell 11. Captain Marvel 12. Avengers: Endgame 13. The Peanut Butter Falcon 14. Ford vs Ferrari 15. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood 16. The Lion King 17. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker 18. Apollo 11 19. 1917 20. The Secret Life of Pets 2 |

Ugh, we're finally getting Portrait of a Lady on Fire here in Raleigh this weekend, and I won't be able to see it until Saturday, the day after the deadline. Any way the deadline can get pushed back to the end of the weekend?
