Is it me or does the image in all the screencaps look somewhat squashed? Wider than it should be? Could be the CinemaScope lenses, but it really irks me in what is otherwise a stellar release.

Read the link in Grubert's post where Mr. Belston explains this.

Default They could have offered a smilebox version

Disk 2 of How the West Was Won used a program that eliminated the problems of showing Cinerama on a flat screen. The shape is a bow tie. That is the way the film looked in the theater. The center was the same size as ends. But because of the center being farther away from the audience, it looked smaller.

On its way from Netflix. I'm quite anxious in taking at least a peek as soon as possible when it arrives even if I don't have time this weekend to watch the whole movie.

It is incredible how vastly better this Blu-ray edition looks over the prior dvd version. Anyone on the fence about picking this up should not be, it is simply a fabulous disc.

I'm not even a 50's biblical Sword-'N-Sandals fan, and this thing looks amazing in hi-def.

And let it be known that this historically hit widescreen first, and "Ten Commandments" and "Ben-Hur" only came afterwards...

+1 and then some as I was glued to my chair. Seriously folks, give this one a watch ASAP even if you just rent it.

It's Fox Mick, so no doubt it will be coded "A" only.
(and the Beaver review specifies "A" too)

well i know they are usually region locked... but some of the more recent releases have been region free.. i think Napoleon Dynamite... may have been from sites I've seen? Passion Of The Christ? , Futurama - Into The Wild Green Yonder ? seems like they might be only locking new releases?

I finally watched it, having brought it home a few days ago. The PQ is outstanding. There are a few scenes that are kinda so-so, (Come on, it's a 55 year old film) but I think overall it is excellent. Sound is good. I am very pleased with my purchase and would highly recommend this title to everyone. It is somewhat amazing that the swordfight scene was filmed without any CGI. A great piece of filmaking.

Great, down to the "Cinemascope" tm coloring, just as I remember it when I saw it as a kid circa 1953 for the first time, what ever, funny things you remember.

Default The Robe: Is it me, my equipment or the film

I'm watching this movie right now and this is the first time I noticed something and I was wondering if it was me, my equipment or the Film? At 47:20 - 47:34 of the film, there appears to be ground movement between where Jean Simmons is sitting (on what is clearly a marble seat in the garden) and the foreground (which is probably a matte painting). Has anyone else noticed this?? Almost looks like an earthquake is taking place with a fault line! At least IMO! Thanks!!

Rich

And it really doesn't bother me that much because I think it is not only a good transfer to BLU but if I'm able to notice flaws in the way the film was shot and/or edited, so much the better.

I am curious about this now. I'll check it out once I get home and report here.

By the way you describe it, it sounds like an error in the background matte SFX back then. McFly hadn't shown up in the 50's yet to show them the CGI Flux Capacitor

The Robe looks nice.

Anyone else thinks that screenshots of The Robe on blu-ray.com review sucks? Colors are much better on actual disc.
