I had this player's disc tray get jammed when I inserted the disc for "Life After Beth". Managed to get it out with a little trick I discovered, but no other disc causes the disc to get stuck. And the disc will still play, too! Weird...

It was only £14 so it was worth a shot, the photo in the listing (see below) has no branding on the remote but what turns up is the official branded remote with a sticker over the Panasonic badge! It doesn't have the 'HDR' button(s) that the later models have but as the Optimiser can be accessed thru the video settings button (which works fine) then that doesn't bother me at all. Took a week to arrive (HK to UK) and was well packed.

[edit]

And I just realised that the basic TV functions at the top of the remote are programmable on this US version of the remote so now I can use it to change the volume and AV input of my Sony TV too. Brilliant! (Panasonic removed this functionality from the UK versions of these remotes, I've no idea why.) **** it, even though I bought this one for a spare as I have the N2QAYA000086 already I'm gonna order another one.
Hiya! I'd love to upgrade to one of these remotes. There seem to be similar remotes in N2QAYA000086, N2QAYA000128, and N2QAYA000131. Would you be able to confirm what the differences are between them and that all three would operate successfully with the UB820? Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Two months and a half since I left my 420 (november 25th 2019) to be serviced as it doesn't read the third layer out of 100 GB discs, and it still hasn't been repaired.
I e-mailed Panasonic Spain last Thursday on a polite way but warning them that if the player is not repaired in two weeks I'm sueing them.
What they're doing is unnacceptable.

Default Settings Question

A couple of quick questions...………………..

1...My display is a Sammy KS9800, capable of close to 1,500 nits. Should I use Middle/High Luminance or Super High for the optimizer or neither and just leave the optimizer off?

2...What should "High Clarity Sound" be set to? I'm running 2 hdmi outs> 1 to video on KS9800 and 1 to Audio on Sammy K950 Dolby Atmos Soundbar.

Audio Options (2).jpg

Thanks

1. I would use the Middle/High Luminance setting. I'm not familiar with the KS9800 and how it tone maps etc., but you can also try HDR Optimizer OFF and see which handles it better.

2. I don't think the High Clarity Sound has any effect unless you are playing music (i.e. cd). It has zero zero effect with movie playback.

ou want to know the latest news about my UB420 that doesn't read the third layer on 100 GB discs?
Panasonic Spain says they haven't detected any issues with the player. I've asked them around 6 or 7 times viae-mail if they have checked the player with three layer discs, start to skip chapters until at one point on the last part of the movie, picture freezes, breaks into macroblocks and eventually stops playing.
Nothing, they don't answer to that question.
They want to mail the player, unrepaired, ship it to my new flat as I've moved of town since I left the player to be serviced on November 25th!
I've told them to change the disc drive reading unit, that in my opinion the problem is there, and that on my former address there's nobody living and that I'm not giving them my new address until they have repaired my player and they can prove it with a video that they can send me via e-mail.
I've also told them that if the player is not at home by March 2nd and repaired, I'm sueing them.
Over 3 months to repair an UHD BD player is not normal.
I love how this player looks, its picture quality is much better than the one of my Sony X-800, but I don't want to keep it. It may failagain and it's beeing and oddyssey to get it repaired, if I get.
As soon as I get it repaired I'm selling it.

It's Panasonic Spain that is based in Madrid, if it was based in Barcelona (like Sony) or anywhere else in Northern Spain my player would have been repaired ages ago.
An beware, I'm not Catalonian or agree with Catalonia's independence, but I must admit that they're, along the rest of Northern Spain, are on a higher level than the rest.

I have the 86 and the 131. The 86 is the remote that came with the non-4K BDT700 player from Panasonic but as it uses the same remote frequencies as pretty much any Panny player then it works fine. You don't get newer buttons like the HDR button but you can access all that stuff from the in-play settings menu anyway.

The 131 came with the US version of the UB900 (not 9000) 4K player and, again, it works perfectly with the 820. A couple of buttons might not do anything (can't remember which ones) and the same applies as the above re: lack of HDR button but every bit of essential functionality is retained. I liked it so much I bought two of them.

I love it that at the end you just have to take a jab at the Sony (yet) again.

I have an LG C8. Is this player really worth $300 more than the 420? Both have HDR optimizer. The amount of discs with Dolby Vision doesn’t seem worth the upcharge.

The only upgrade to picture quality will be Dolby Vision. For me DV has been a wash with HDR10+. They both seem to deliver equally to my eyes. Perhaps when 12 bit displays are more common we will see a more decisive difference. Until then I personally would save the $300. The 420 is solid as far as PQ.

Yes it's worth it. DV disc looks amazing. Beats hdr10 with the optimizer hands down. More future proof. Only if your on a extremely tight budget get the 420.

No it doesn't...the only way DV beats HDR10 "hands down " as you put it, is if your set isn't up to par in the first place. There isn't much of a difference between DV and HDR10 on a good set.

Let me say personally, (on my set up) Dolby Vision is breathtaking as long as the studio actually puts some effort into it. I watched Apocalypse Now in DV and it was the closest home video got to looking like film to me (still not 100% there though)

It’s great that you love Dolby Vision but that’s no reason to give bad advice. The Panasonic 4K players in this line are identical in picture quality other than the top models offering DV. I have the 420 in my game room hooked up to my Samsung 4K and watching movies in HDR10+ is a revelation in PQ. I would put that up against DV as an equal in PQ any day of the week.

I'm not comparing Dolby vision to HDR 10+. Matter of fact as of this point there's no comparison. DV has way more content yet hdr10+ has next to nothing. My advice is to get a player that has DV and that's that.

I think I understand what you are saying now. Dolby Vision is the ultimate picture quality and it trumps all others in that regard.

Okay, that’s the point you make so then surely you must agree from a financial standpoint people should just buy the Sony x700.

All right, there you go. Dolby Vision is all that matters so just buy the cheapest player that offers it.....and that’s that.
