Crap score by Dave Gruisin too.
The music is varied, but great. 'The Chase' theme was used on video trailers for years afterwards.

I think it is a film that mostly resonates with the yanks.
I love it, and I know a lot of other Brits that do. Then again, it is just 'The Famous Five' rehashed for 80's America. It might be more of an age / nostalgia thing. It does seem to capture popular culture at a certain time and place.

Day one but I still hate Sloth.
He was always a really really odd choice. I'd love to have heard the pitch when they got to his character. Then again, somehow The Black Hole got made by Disney to cash in on those Star Wars bucks, so I guess anything is possible...

Still hoping for some kind of new special features on this...

Warner's Gremlins UHD hasn't impressed anyone so I'm gonna have to wait for reviews before buying Goonies.

I’m just curious if the scenes underground will be super dark or maybe the HDR will brighten it up a bit?

Apples to oranges. They were shot with different cameras and lenses. Gremlins was shot spherical whereas The Goonies was anamorphic. They have different technical qualities so they won't look the same. The Shining, for example, was released on UHD at the same time as Gremlins and they too look different from one another, so it's not on WB. Gremlins is just a really grainy movie, but the UHD is fantastic. They did an amazing job with the transfer. The people who weren't impressed didn't know what they were looking at.

The UHD review on this site for Gremlins is total bs. A 3.5 for video is so far off the mark it's not even funny.

If thats what your basing it on, you should just pass on Goonies. If you hate grain you should also pass.

And if you judge movie transfers based on nothing, you should pass on all releases.

I hope they use this poster as the cover of the steelbook, like the Zavvi blu:

I used to have the novelization back in the 80s with this cover.

I'll buy three copies if/when they ever release a version with the TV cut. I don't care about the octo but I know I had a recorded version with the convenience store scene included.

Fair enough. It's just that I'd seen more people pan the disc rather than praise it, with "marginal upgrade" being the term most commonly used. I have no interest in upgrading my Blu-ray but even if I loved the film enough to buy it again I'd probably still skip it. I'm still going to wait for reviews for Goonies before upgrading.

BTW, yours was the only post I replied to because you provided a fair and balanced counter-argument. Everyone else who disagreed with what I said was just thread crapping.

Day 1, one of my most watched movies. This is my first hearing of deleted scenes and glad they were left out; good lord are they horrible.

The store scene was fine. I'd like to see the cut Goonie oath scene sometime.

But really I'd like to see the HUGE chunks cut out of Explorers even more... but that's for another thread...

One of the biggest upgrades with all these Warner UHDs is that many of their Blu-ray counterparts were encoded with the ancient VC-1 codec. The Wizard of Oz, Gremlins, Blade Runner, Superman, The Shining, The Goonies, Batman '89, etc were all mastered that way. The new restorations can show subtle improvements like in the case of Gremlins, and massive improvements like The Shining. The old Gremlins Blu-ray has blown highlights, chunky grain, a softness to it that still exists on the UHD but it's now more evident that it's the source material that's sorta soft, whereas the older transfer had the same issues that plagued the source material but on top of that you had poor encoding.

The biggest takeaway with a title like Gremlins is that it looks FILMIC. The older Blu-ray doesn't have that. In motion, it's a pretty gorgeous disc.
