Penton-Man,
Are you able to clarify on the P/DW decision?

1. Was BDA not offered a bite at the apple?
2. Was the BDA offered a bite and refused?
3. Did BDA lose the bid to HD DVD after making their best and final?

Thanks!

O.K. guys,
I finally caught up with all my PM’s tonight, so please, purty please no more.

This has been one rough day for me. After helping mount a “response” to Paramount’s deci$ion, I come home to nearly getting bitten by a 3-4 ft. long red diamond rattlesnake.

That puts things into perspective, mighty quickly.

Well, you know we all here are glad that you were able to use cat-like reflexes to avoid that one.

Of course it was a red rattlesnake. You can't trust them. A blue one would never do that.

The “HD DVD process” was too matured in its progression, (by the time that anyone did find out) for anything fruitful to be accomplished, even if had been desired to be.

I really would prefer not to elaborate on the specifics because it could put me in jeopardy by revealing my sources and it’s water under the bridge anyway.

Thanks for your response, I do appreciate the time you take to answer so many on the various forums you frequent.

I'm trying to reconcile a "buy-out" for pure financial reasons without a consideration for entertaining a bid from the other suitor. If the BDA made a considered decision to not compete via incentives in this case, I can understand that. But if P/DW made no attempt to get the best offer on the table by hearing offers from both sides, that makes me think that there was more to the decision process than just incentives.

1) The NYT is reporting both the $150m payoff and an actual length (18 months) that encompasses holidays 2007 and 2008. Any insiders that can confirm this?

2) Have Disney, Fox/MGM, or LGF been made similar offers?

3) Any hints from Warner that are the same?

hello Penton,

In light of the Michael Bay response, it would be nice if you could lend a ear today on the chatter, and tell us if his words are making waves...

From our perspective from the other side of the planet, lashing at Paramount like that and threatening to walk away from the sequel of a huge blockbuster should plunge Para into embarassement today, to say the least...

On a more general note, do A-list directors have any contractual power in determining where and how their films will be published on video, and their direct involvement in the process?

And finally, are there any chances of finding other A-names who're royally pissed at the Para announcement and are willing to go public?

and that was great news but I think the BDA need to have a little chat with Warner Bros. Maybe lock them up for a bit.

Also, lock up exclusivity rights from New Line for the LOTR movies. Time to fight dirty.

Yes I too, penton, paid, would like to know if you think Michael Bay with Spielberg as exec. prod. have the power to stop P/DW from releasing Transforers exclusive to HD DVD if they so desired.

If Spielberg has that sort of control over his movies, could Bay also?

Or even Spielberg himself. An exec prod usually has MORE power than the director.

If Spielberg threatens to walk paramount must do as he says. Losing Spielberg would be like the Colts losing Peyton Manning.

There are alot of people at Paramount that are unhappy with the recent decision, despite what is said or has been said in the mainstream press.

In regards to contracts, A-list directors and such, it is not uncommon for a film to get green lighted for production even before all the details of the *contract* have been determined and authorized signatures obtained. The process is not like signing papers to buy a home and after that, you finally get to move in.

In general, most directors are interested in things like who gets “final cut” at the end. I’d like not to elaborate further, esp. in regards to packaged media.

A major studio normally desires to establish a mutually trustworthy relationship with creative talent from the get-go, so that it translates into a long-term successfully productive endeavor. It doesn’t make much sense to piss off a director over one film, when the studio and the same director could otherwise go on to produce 10 or more profitable motion pictures in the future.

I got to get some work done now guys.
Later.

It’s truly amazing to me that people even read his postings anymore given his past FUD filled behavior.

I mean, time after time, he posts garbage like……..
1. BD50 is science fiction and he promotes that idea with vigor for months.
or,
2. Sony has a rule that requires their compressionists to do 2-day encodes……Right!

Etc., etc.
You guys that may read him regularly or are longtime AVMS members (like Darin) probably know more FUD from him off the top of your head.

Just several days ago people tell me that he was trying to float the idea that the BDA gave some free Blu-ray discs to BB to make the deal happen, which is just more B.S. The B.D.A. didn’t, nor did Sony nor did anybody.

And just today, paidgeek tells me that the A-man posted as fact that Sony has done all of Paramount’s authoring, encoding, etc. on its BD edition titles in the past. NOT.

I guess he thinks he can post just about anything on AVMS and remain unscathed.

As far as the rattler goes, he is truly an honorable but deadly animal. He was just protecting his own territory, I was the trespasser. I’ll tell you one thing, the incident sure as hell gave me a few more grey hairs. Even getting a “dry bite” is not a pleasant experience.

To the mods, how about keeping this post right here on the Insider’s Thread forever so as to enlighten newcomers and delusional HD DVD supporters as to one V.P.’s long-term posting habits, which should never be forgotten.
