Untitled David Lynch Series (rumor)

There have been rumors about a new David Lynch project for a while now.

It all seemingly started with a Laura Dern interview back in May 2019 in which she revealed Lynch had asked her to shave her head for a role.

In February 2020, a casting rumor was posted on Reddit, concerning a possible film project:



The Twin Peaks Archive tweeted about the casting rumor.

A few days later, still in February, this was posted on Reddit:



The Twin Peaks Archives then posted an update on the rumor (via Recapped), now referring to a television series:



And two days ago Jordan Ruimy tweeted this:



There is no need to state the obvious: it's just rumors and none of it from official sources. People could be mixing things up, extrapolating, or even outright making stuff up. Or maybe not. There seems to be smoke, so there might be fire. No harm in discussing this enticing possibility.

(There are those who believe this could somehow be connected to the fourth season of Twin Peaks, and there are in-depth discussions about it on Reddit and the Dugpa forum, but I don't want to post it all here.)

Like I said in the TP thread, I hope these rumors aren’t true. At least the part about him working with a Netflix. A Lynch miniseries on Netflix wouldn’t get a physical release.

That’s not certain, considering several Netflix movies and series have been getting physical releases.

Shows that they own outright have not gotten any, aside from Stranger Things. Shows that are owned by others have(Orange is the New Black by Lionsgate, for example). Some of their films are getting Criterion releases now, but AFAIK they’ve never added a show to the collection(not sure that Bergman and Dekalog count).

I’m sure if Lynch wants a physical release they’d allow it! And I could easily see Criterion releasing a Lynch helmed limited series or at least it wouldn’t be surprising if they did.

Haven’t Watts and Dern starred in shows for Netflix? (Gypsy and F is for Family). Could be totally unrelated to Lynch, but I am 100% down for a new Lynch project.

There were the three Fassbinder TV shows they’ve released and going back to the DVD days there was also Robert Altman’s TANNER 88.

Criterion! David has a working relationship with them and Netflix does now. If anything comes out through them Criterion will definitely have it in the bag. I don't think there's any room to worry. BTW Scenes from a Marriage and Dekalog do count. They're not "tv shows" in the usual sense.

Lynch is denying that nothing is happening now – which is no different from most everyone else. He also makes it quite clear that he’s still very interested in the platform of a television series. Where, when, and if that could happen is anyone’s guess, but I don’t think the previous speculation was baseless. And I don’t know why a small portion of Lynch’s fan base continue to try to rigidly define a director who has built an artistic career based on ambiguity.

I don't think any of the speculation was baseless either nor do I think something like this will never happen. I just think for now it won't be anytime soon. But hey, I'm all about surprises and if Lynch does have something coming down the pipes any time count me in.

Like The Sovereign explained, Lynch didn't deny anything outright, he actually acknowledged the rumors, then said there's nothing involving multiple people (crews) being worked on right now for the obvious reasons.

David Lynch has provided a cryptic tease that he might be developing a new feature film or TV series.

Eventually, Sutherland and Lynch acknowledge, time will run out for this particular project as well, with the director offering cryptically that “there might be things coming along that would mean less time could be spent on the channel.” But with so many people around the world now relying on Lynch to salute them each morning, one wonders when might be the right time to finally hit pause on the daily Weather Reports.

When the question about what he would be doing if there wasn’t a pandemic, Lynch explained that he’d likely be doing what his fans hope he would be doing—filmmaking.

“I don’t know for sure, but I’d be probably making a film or a continuing story,” he answered.

Well, I certainly didn't need another reason to hate this pandemic, but I sure do now! (Though i kind of agree that pseudo-isolation has its perks.)
