I find it hard to take it serious when someone waxes about a theatrical viewing then talks about the home not being able to compare; but their reference for that second viewing setting is meager SDR blu-ray display of a modern film released with a native 4K master! No less.

It boggled my mind you watched the film that many times, and on top of that clear passion for the title don't have the 4K as a mandatory attempt to match your theatrical experience...

Anyway. I'm really looking forward to this movie. I kick myself that I now know about the one-take style (because I didn't even watch a trailer or know squat about it before coming to the thread). But at least I can do the mental gymnastics beforehand needed to ignore the trickery. Rather than picking up on it as its happening and being distracted by it.

Honestly the “spot-the-cuts” game lasted maybe 20 minutes for me, then I just settled in and watched the movie for what it is. And it’s really, really good.

Shane does a fine job...his knowledge is pretty much on par with most of the members here...but of course the ones here have an inflated sense of self worth and think they are better then Roger Deakins

Except that Shane uses his 4K projector to talk to us about the HDR and WCG, which ought to be a red flag for those following his every word. But it's not. So who is the one who doesn't know anything about reviewing UHD and what is and isn't a suitable constitution for an expert in this space?

I will agree with his statement regarding the surround sound mix, it's not as bombastic as other recent 'war' movies, and even hearing it in Dolby Cinema, to me, it left a lot to be desired.

don't confuse quantity with quality...there are a bunch of members here who post 24/7...but just because they post 90 times a day and respond to every thread doesn't make them an expert...now there are some great, knowledgeable members with great insight and technical expertise but too often they get drowned out by the 'others'

I don't understand the people who constantly put down Shane or Brass Tax etc...they are just regular guys posting their impressions/reviews from the perspective of an everyday guy...they don't pretend to be Spielberg or Scorsese...I like that Shane is one of the few people who post reviews of digital 4K iTunes/Vudu copies...which is another problem here where too many people are physical disc snobs (yes everyone agrees physical is better but the landscape is changing so it's good to get a different perspective)

plus if the digital looks impressive then you know that the disc is going to look even more amazing...so if you're on the fence about buying a disc then a digital review is a good way to gauge the upcoming UHD release

I find their reviews solid and also entertaining

I give this post a solid 7.8. It did a lot of things that I liked, but its content didn't truly blow me away as I was expecting.

Shane primarily uses a JVC NX7 for reviews. After the DTM update, it’s amazing for HDR. A projector can’t get brighter than a TV, but it’s hard to tell when looking at 120” screen. And the JVC produces deep blacks. I have the JVC NX5 and I prefer the HDR “pop” it presents over all 3 of my 4K TVs.

I find his reviews reliable because most movies look good on TVs, but a large screen really reveals a movies flaws. If Shane gives it a 10, I know it’s special.

Anywho I can’t wait to watch 1917. It will be an epic experience.

Or perhaps some discs reveal the flaws of a projector.

Nope. Not from what I’ve seen. The JVC is like watching movies on a giant OLED in the right environment. A huge screen just shows more detail, but what do I know... I’ve only poured hours into both.

I agree, but most people on here have only experienced panels and regurgitate old myths about projectors, so I wouldn't waste my breath on the subject.
