Universal Releasing Theatrical, Home Entertainment Releases Simultaneously

Seeking to counter the coronavirus spread and delayed theatrical release schedules, Universal Pictures March 16 announced it would release its current theatrical slate into home entertainment distribution channels simultaneously.

The sudden move in one stroke eliminated the traditional 90-day theatrical window — an exclusivity exhibitors have fought hard for ever since home entertainment emerged. But last weekend’s domestic box office was the lowest in 20 years, prompting the studio to act.

Movies include The Invisible Man, The Hunt and Emma, among others. Universal’s DreamWorks Animation Trolls sequel, Trolls World Tour, will now hit theatrical and home entertainment channels on April 10. Titles will be available on assorted digital channels for a 48-hour rental period at $19.99 each.

“Rather than delaying these films or releasing them into a challenged distribution landscape, we wanted to provide an option for people to view these titles in the home that is both accessible and affordable,” NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell said in a statement. “We hope and believe that people will still go to the movies in theaters where available, but we understand that for people in different areas of the world that is increasingly becoming less possible.”

LG Display’s rollable OLED TV dilemma

LG Display is struggling with low yield of rollable OLED panels for televisions due to using glass substrates.

Industry sources on Mar. 11 said LG Display seems to be using ultra-thin glass substrates with a thickness of under 0.2mm for the rollable panels. Due to this material, not only has the yield gone down, but potential loss rates are also high due to the fragility of the substrates.

LG Display had originally planned to roll out its 65-inch 4K rollable OLED TV panel in 2019, but had to delay the launch to this year. The display maker is now looking for solutions.

NATO Cautions Against Bypassing Traditional Theatrical Window

Theater owners on March 17 took a swipe at plans by some studios to bypass the traditional theatrical release window and make new films immediately available for home viewing as a means of contending with the closure of theaters amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The National Association of Theater Owners (NATO) issued a statement blasting the practice, although the group was careful not to blame the studios but, rather, “speculation in the media that the temporary closure of theaters will lead to accelerated or exclusive releases of theatrical titles to home streaming.
“Such speculation ignores the underlying financial logic of studio investment in theatrical titles,” the NATO statement said. “To avoid catastrophic losses to the studios, these titles must have the fullest possible theatrical release around the world.

“While one or two releases may forgo theatrical release, it is our understanding from discussions with distributors that the vast majority of deferred releases will be rescheduled for theatrical release as life returns to normal. When those titles are rescheduled, they will make for an even fuller slate of offerings than normal as they are slotted into an already robust release schedule later in the year.”

studios are not non-profit organizations, they will go with what’s best for their bottom line, not position statements generated by any special interest group

Comment from me is that it's too ***ing expensive. Society hates me for being single and punishes me for this sin, by making everything more difficult, awkward and expensive. Paying double for holidays, hotel rooms, paying more for local taxes, food is more expensive in smaller sizes, etc. Therefore I sigh with the same resignation and deep depression when I read this. This is just one more thing - they are basically saying that movies are for families and groups of people and pricing for that, at a time when we're being told to self-isolate and us single people are even more isolated than ever.

In short, I hate them for it. It's the same discrimination as in the rest of life.

Sky Selling Theatrical Releases in the Home

Sky Store will have a range of NBCU titles available the same day as their global cinema release. They will be priced at £15.99 ($18.99). This is available for Sky+ and Sky Q subscribers. Sky Store digital sales typically include a DVD backup sent in the mail.

The program begins with DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls World Tour on April 6th. This is the first-time customers have been able to rent NBCUniversal movies as soon as they hit cinemas. On March 20th, The Hunt, The Invisible Man and Emma will also be available on-demand on Sky Store, following their recent release in cinemas.

Originally, some hypothesized, including infectious disease specialists here in the U.S., that asymptomatic spread was not a significant driver of the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 (coronavirus), now they are having second thoughts and changing their position, i.e. it is a significant factor in spread.

The news media has caught on to this change of philosophy and are also using the term ‘super spreaders’, a term I personally dislike because it a stigmatizes such folks. Similar to how someone would refer to the ‘swine flu’ as the North American flu or coronavirus as the Chinese virus.
