They claim to be an "essential" business because they happen to sell computer keyboards and computer mice- all of them pricier gaming models.
GameStop is sitting up in their coffin and can see the undertaker coming with the coffin lid. They couldn't survive 2 days being shut down, let alone 2 weeks. Good riddance to them.

Only a matter of time before the entire country does the same. It is the only way we can stop the spread since we can’t rely on everyone being responsible and making good decisions.

Agreed. People are ignoring it from what I can see. Was down at the beach today (job) and it was packed. People of all ages.

GameStop Shutting All California Stores

Quote:
With California Governor Gavin Newsom ordering residents to remain at home if at all possible to help combat the spread of the coronavirus, GameStop has reversed course and said it would close all stores in the Golden State until further notice.

“The closure will remain in effect until further notice as we obtain more information from the California Governor’s Office,” GameStop said in a media statement.

Earlier the nation’s largest video game retailer — citing self-described essential retail status — said it would keep more than 5,400 stores operating at reduced hours and with safety protocols in place as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

DEG Nordic Launching ‘Mega Movie Week’ Promo to Drive Digital Transactional Market

Quote:
As consumers around the world stay home during the coronavirus crisis, The Digital Entertainment Group: Nordic Committee (DEGN) March 23 is launching “Mega Movie Week,” a cross-category campaign to drive consumer engagement with the digital transactional market.

During “Mega Movie Week” DEGN members, including NBCUniversal, Nordisk Film, SF Studios, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Warner Bros. Entertainment, will offer consumers a range of the latest digital movies at special prices for one week only with retailers including the Apple TV app, Google Play Store, Viaplay, SF Anytime, Blockbuster, PlayStation Store, Rakuten TV, Canal Digital, Altibox and Elisa.

“Inspired in part by shared learnings from two successful iterations of ‘Mega Movie Week’ managed in the U.K. by DEGN’s sister association, Digital Entertainment Group International, and by the evolution of previous Scandinavian consumer education campaigns, the DEGN’s ‘Mega Movie Week’ campaign drives awareness for a range of compelling consumer offers aimed at encouraging consumer trial of digital transactional services,” according to DEGN.

Amazon Prime Video has begun to do this as well earlier this week. Is it not more disappointing 'controversial' for Amazon Prime to do this for their customers because of their questionable video bit-rate on their own service?

Can't blame them for trying as their distribution options are rather limited now.

Video on demand will be more popular while the pandemic continues and so long as the internet remains stable; the question is will it retain that new popularity when normalcy returns?

Amazon Prime streaming is so unreliable that any new hiccup is hard to notice from among all of their routine ones. I have not streamed anything from them in several weeks, but I never expect much from them when I try. I have no similar issues with any other service.

Things have already ‘shook out’. The masses don’t want to pay to own individual films anymore. This has been a obvious pattern for a while now. We might see a temporary boost with rentals over the next couple of months but that’s about it. The numbers are single digit growth. That’s rubbish.

I don't think it will, either. Nothing about video on demand can replicate the experience of seeing a movie at the theater. When the cinema reopens, interest in video on demand will likely subside.

Even though I love my HT and large screen, there is nothing like a cinema trip with the family. It’s a night out with loved ones and a chance to pig out!

But growth . . . is still growth. What was the number for 2019? Something like $2.6 billion for EST?

As opposed to physical disc which continues it's decline in double digit numbers.

Well it's happening guys, Vudu has jumped into the Frey. They are offering three Movies while in Theaters. The Invisible Man, The Hunt, and Emma, Rent for $20. They call it Theater at Home, Early Access, at the Comfort of Home. This is the tip of the Iceberg, get ready for the New Streaming Access, courtesy of Vudu!

All of those have already been released in theaters. I know because I saw two of them. The ONLY reason this is happening is because theaters are closed. The tiny pittance they'll get from streaming is better than nothing. This will not become the norm, especially for big blockbusters.

Yep. WB just announced WONDER WOMAN 1984 will be shown in theaters not streaming.

Last year 786 movies went to theaters in NA. How many of those were blockbusters and how many were independent low budget films.

You can bet that Hollywood has this $20 Home Theater rental model under an electron microscope. Yes the model will be skewed due to the mandated Shelter-In-Place edicts. But don't be surprised if when the CV19 pandemic is over, they continue the model if it proves profitable.
