I’d wager a good 95% of customers I have had the unfortunate opportunity to speak to say this is just hoax, it’s just a cold, no big deal, my life is ruined because I had a party planned, etc etc. All the anger and frustration is taken out on grocery store employees such as myself. Like I’m sorry we don’t have your eggs, milk, toilet paper, paper towels and jam you like. We had one elderly lady (in her early 70s) get pissed off that we “caved to the lies” and that we created “an hour for elderly and at risk people” to shop. People are crying at their lunch breaks and 15min breaks too. I’ve never seen such defeated faces in my life. I don’t know how it is in other states but it’s really brought the worst out and I thought hurricane attitudes were bad.
This is a shame. What happened to people sticking together in a situation like this?

And the ignorance is astounding. How dumb do people have to be at this point to think this is all a hoax? A global hoax? Fake videos of hospitals? Or that it's just a cold? This will go down as an embarrassing low point in our modern history.

It blows my mind that some people are still bragging about their in-store bargain Blu-ray hauls. Really?!

I love a good bargain as much as the next person, and I love finding said bargains in stores, but is now really the time for that kind of reckless behavior? Yeah, I said it: reckless!

Is it worth it? Even if you're lucky to experience mild effects or you're asymptomatic altogether, the elderly or immunocompromised person you're unknowingly passing it on to might not be so lucky.

I'm seeing a bunch of in-store deals now that I would have picked up without thinking twice about in the past. But this has really made me consider what's worth and what isn't, and I don't think any movie or any deal is worth it - especially when you can still buy movies online. Even if you can't take advantage of a certain in-store deal right now, equal or better deals almost always come back around.
I agree overall, but I usually do my grocery shopping in Wal-Mart due to prices being substantially cheaper than my local grocery stores. So last Wednesday I had to buy food. I live in a small apartment and don't have much storage room for extra food. I go once a week and buy a week's worth of food. So I was at Wal-Mart already to buy food. If you're there anyways for an hour to buy food, what's a 2-minute stop in front of the movie section?

I surely wouldn't go just to find movies though. Hell no!

I hate going there during this crisis, and honestly last week they were stripped bare of pretty much all meat, pasta, bread, and other important items, so I ended up stopping at the local grocery store also, which did have much better stock. I was able to buy some beef and bread and pasta.

Maybe, but at the rate COVID-19 is infecting people worldwide, you'd think it spreads just by stepping outside and taking a breath. Every time I turn the TV on, the numbers of infected are up by thousands. The number of deaths in the US, however, have remained low (last time I checked a few hours ago the deaths were at 245). The experts on TV are telling people not to seek testing unless you're symptomatic, and even then only if you're having trouble breathing, so if they're not testing every Tom, Dick and Harry, how are those numbers spiking so rapidly?

Bingo!! That’s exactly why I’ve been freaking out all this time. And it’s especially rapid here in NY.

Not even close. The current death toll has risen to 348

Coronavirus cases in New York State now top 10,000

Quote:
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said Saturday morning that the number of coronavirus cases in the state has increased by more than 3,000 and now tops 10,000.

The state has conducted 45,437 tests, he said, and now has a total of 10,356 coronavirus cases.

"The more tests you take, the more positives you find," he said, adding that New York is now conducting more tests per capita than China or South Korea.

The governor also said that because the federal government on Friday declared New York a "major disaster" the state is eligible for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) aid. He said FEMA is now helping to get temporary hospitals up and running in the state.

New York City alone has 6,211 cases, an increase of 1,800. Case number increases are slowing in Westchester County while they are growing on Long Island.

The state's rate of hospitalization is now 15 percent of coronavirus cases, the governor said.

Cuomo said the state anticipates that between 40 and 80 percent of New Yorkers will be infected with coronavirus, however, authorities hope to spread out the rate of infection in order to not overwhelm the state's health system.

Flu is 0.1% I believe. The coronavirus death rate in the U.S. continues to fall, but with so many untested, it's really impossible to guess what the true death rate really is. If all the critical patients are able to get access to respirators, like in Germany, the death rate will probably end up about 3-4 times higher than the flu. But that's a big if.

The Diamond Princess ship has had 8 death out of 700 positive cases, a 1.14% death rate. It's possible a few more currently in hospitals could die, but it's the only known case where everyone was tested. Also noteworthy is that the passengers were primarily elderly. Someone calculated that if the ages of the ship passengers were representative of the population as a whole, then the death rate would have been 3 times lower (around 0.3%).

I saw the doctor yesterday for an appointment I had scheduled some time ago. The place was pretty crowded and they checked my temperature as soon as I arrived. BP was a little high but other than that, I am ok. The doctor ordered blood work- which is routine. I wanted to get to the hospital as early as possible today to have it drawn so I could get in and out.

The place was pretty dead but it was around 7:15.. No one had any masks on and and the real thing that surprised me was that they did not even take my temperature. You'd figure in all the places...the hospital would be the one place you'd get your temperature checked.

Daily deaths in U.S. have gone down the last two days. Peak was 57 on Thursday, dropping to 49 on Friday and 46 yesterday.

Also new cases dropped yesterday for the first time.

It's going up because NY is doing more testing and those people were already infected. This comes as no surprise especially given the close proximity of people in NYC. Of course thousands in nothing in a city with a population of over 8M.

Cuomo / NY has secured 70K doses of Hydroxychloroquine, and 750K for Chloroquine . He also brought up an interesting theory that Africa may be having a lower infection rate because of the more common use of these anti-malaria drugs.

So what about the Serious or Critical cases? Those are the ones that put all the strain on our hospital systems, specifically the ICUs.

And from reading those stats, if you are a S or C case your odds of dying are much greater than you walking away.

I'm wondering if it's more societally responsible to go to a grocery store or use a delivery service...

1) yes I think for the flu it is around 0.1% but that is a rough estimate klike with COVID-19 no0t everyone that gets it will see a doctor and get tested.

2) the BIG issues with COVID-19 is that it can have a long incubation period (up to two weeks) where people are asymptomatic and an even longer "sic" period (up to a month before the final outcome is known).

I heard this week that a friend of mine (51 years old),he passed away from this, he was in the hospital (in Europe) for three weeks on a ventilator but he lost the fight.

so using "current" numbers is not right, like you said we don't know how many other sic but asymptomatic people are out there, but even more importantly we don't know how many people will die from this, in a month we will now about all the people that are sic and showing symptoms today.

3) We don't know the lasting effects (some respiratory disease s can temporary or permanently scar the lungs leaving people weaker even once they recover) also we don't know if we can build immunity on this and there have been cases where people tested positive then negative and categorised as recovered that caught it again (was it a false negative). IF there is (even)temporary scarring and it is re-catchable even looking at the recovered list won't be enough.

It's misleading because it's based only on the number of closed cases. So far, less than 2% of all cases are closed.
